Just Stop Oil’s Roger Hallam has called on his supporters to shut down London every day for nearly a month, starting from Monday.

The Extinction Rebellion co-founder, 57, has been inspired by the success of the group’s Dutch arm in forcing MPs to vote on ways to phase out fossil fuel subsidies.

The new campaign will involves low marches “on an unprecedented scale”. Activists are being urged to get arrested up to five times each in a bid to tie up police resources and then cause further chaos to the justice system by saying “f*** you” to the judge.

Mr Hallam said: “A line has been crossed. “That’s why thousands of people are going out this November. Because they refuse to be humiliated by the absolute evil of what’s happening.

“I spent five years trying to persuade all these over-intellectualised Londoners that closing down [the city] was actually a good idea.”

Just Stop Oil added: “In the last week, the UK has seen the effects of the climate emergency. Seven people are now dead from extreme weather and scientists tell us it will only get worse.”

A spokesman for the Met Police said: “The Met fully supports the right to lawful protest. “We will use all available powers to allow Londoners to continue their daily business during the protests."
