Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke's show regrets and calm family life
Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke is a fan-favourite thanks to his energetic responses to every celebrity's performances and bubbly personality.
The 57-year-old is known for being honest about his opinion on the BBC One competition as well as his cheeky jokes. He recently shocked viewers when he said that he and fellow judge Craig Revel Horwood had performed the same performance as Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin - but naked.
The father-of-two joined the competition when it launched in 2004, famously being partnered with the older, or more reluctant, contestants. His dreams came true in 2020 when he was appointed as Motsi Mabuse's replacement on the judging panel while she was forced to isolate due to COVID-19.
He's had many regrets and pains in his life, with the star opening up about his father's abuse as well as his regrets about the dancing competition. Here, we take a look at his life away from the show as well as his one pain about his time as a dancer...
Strictly regrets
Anton, who was made a permanent judge in 2021, revealed he regrets never winning the competition when he was still a professional dancer.
Strictly's Molly Rainford and Tyler West fuel romance rumours while on tourDespite his legendary status on the BBC hit show, the dancer has never actually won it. Quoting the French singer of ‘Non, je ne regret rien’, Anton said in 2022: “Sadly I don’t care what Edith Piaf says. I never won it and it is a regret.” During his record 18 years on the show, the highest place Anton achieved was coming in second with Emma Barton in 2019.
His second highest was in 2004’s inaugural season when he came third with Lesley Garrett. Throughout the years, he was partnered with the likes of Esther Rantzen, Kate Garraway, Ruth Langsford, Patsy Palmer and Ann Widdecombe.
Anton diplomatically refused to say which of his famous partners he preferred, but insisted all of them should have gone all the way and taken the glitter ball home. He said: “They were all marvellous. I enjoyed dancing and spending time with all of them, some did better than others, that’s all I can say. They were all robbed though, every one of them was robbed.”
Love life
Anton met his wife Hannah Summers in 2011. He revealed that they met at a dinner party and he was instantly smitten, so he decided to follow her to the toilet for a chance to speak to her alone. Speaking on Steph's Packed Lunch in 2021, Anton said: "I knew almost immediately that I loved her. She also loved me immediately but I was holding a bottle of wine.
"I knew from my side it was almost immediately.I saw her across the table there and I thought, wow she is absolutely outrageous," he added. Anton admitted his surprise that Hannah actually spoke to him when he followed her to the ladies', let alone that she actually shared his feelings. Anton, who admitted the exchange made him "look a bit weird", told her he loved her then and there. He continued: "She came out she looked at me and went 'Have you been waiting outside the ladies' for me? And I went 'Yes, it's because I love you.'"
Rarely-seen twins
When he was 51 years old, Anton became a dad for the first time. However, he and Hannah heartbreakingly struggled to conceive. Hannah suffers from the painful condition endometriosis, which can make conceiving extremely difficult. Anton shared that the couple managed to fall pregnant with the twins thanks to IVF.
In 2017, they welcomed twins George and Henrietta, before marrying that same year. He recently opened up about parenthood and said his kids are "so involved with me". He told The Mirror: "They knew I was going out to get an award as they get awards in school. When they found out I was going to the NTAs they were like ‘Good luck, Daddy.’ Henrietta did this little thing with my hand and gave me a good luck charm. She said, 'This is for good luck.' It was so gorgeous. When I got home I put the award on the bedside table in our bedroom.
"I got up early the next morning and George came in. I could hear his feet and he turned to me and said, ‘Daddy, did you win a trophy? Or is it a medal?’ It was just wonderful. I never want it to change. They both want to become dancers and they watch Strictly. Henrietta is all over it and puts her own scores up."
Country Home
With all his hard work, it's no surprise he has a gorgeous country home where he lives with his wife Hannah and their twins. Throughout the years, Anton gave fans tiny sneak peeks into his lavish home through his social media pages and TV interviews.
The TV star previously showed off his rustic kitchen during a video appearance on ITV's This Morning. During a segment called 'Anton du Bake', the dancer took to his spacious kitchen to cook up a storm. Exposed brick covered one side of the wall, adding a country feel to the room.
Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman 'sign deal' to host Strictly for two more yearsThe rest of the space had patterned white and beige tiles and plain white cupboards. He added colour to the room with red equipment such as the microwave and the bread bin. He also has a gorgeous home office which fans got a glimpse at when he was promoting his book in October 2020.
The star filmed inside the room against the backdrop of gigantic wooden bookshelves which ran across two walls.
