Joe Marler told Andy Goode to “eat s***” after being criticised for his behaviour in the aftermath of England’s win over Argentina at the Rugby World Cup.

England earned themselves a bronze medal by beating the Pumas 26-23 in the third-place play-off at the Stade de France on Friday night. Tries from Ben Earl and Theo Dan added to four penalties from Owen Farrell’s boot to edge out Argentina and ensure England finished their tournament on a high note.

Marler did not play against Argentina, with coach Steve Borthwick opting to name a new-look front row. But the 33-year-old was present in Paris and joined his team-mates in the post-match presentation to collect his bronze medal.

He followed Manu Tuilagi to receive his medal from France’s minister for sport, Amelie Oudea-Castera. But while Tuilagi then shook hands with World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont, Marler appeared to walk straight past him.

That led Goode to tweet: “Joe Marler showing a lack of respect for Bill Beaumont and walking straight past without shaking his hand, sums him up really”. Marler didn’t take too kindly to the jibe, replying: “Eat s***, w*** bucket. Let’s catch up soon x,” alongside a lemon emoji.

It is not the first time that Marler and Goode – a former fly-half who won 17 caps for England – have clashed online. During England’s hard-fought 30-24 win over Fiji in the quarter-final, Goode wrote: "Marler asleep in defence probably thinking about trying to be unfunny..."

Marler later shot back with "Appreciate the feedback mate," alongside a kissing emoji. He then added: "And give me a shout if you need a ticket for next week mate – my shout."

The apparent snub of Beaumont is likely to be Marler’s final action as an England rugby player, with retirement around the corner. He has suggested he is going to retire from international rugby for the third and final time, ending on 86 caps for his country.

He will bow out from international rugby alongside scrum-half Ben Youngs, winger Jonny May, prop Dan Cole, scrum-half Danny Care and vice-captain Courtney Lawes. Speaking about his decision, Lawes said: "It's a bit of an end of an era, but it's been a real honour for me to represent England for so long. It flies by. I'm proud of the journey I've been on. To be able to finish with this group, it's something I'll treasure forever."

Marler is known for his larger than life personality, zany haircuts and pranks on team-mates. He hosts a podcast and is likely to continue working in the media when he calls time on his rugby career. The prop has played his entire career with Harlequins, for whom he made his debut in 2009.
