The One Show's Gethin Jones rushes to apologise as guest swears live on air

The One Show host Gethin Jones was left red-faced when a guest swore live on air on Thursday night's episode.

Welsh presenter Gethin and co-host Alex Scott interviewed TV chef Rick Stein as he promoted his brand new cookbook, Simple Suppers. The chat started off innocently enough, but the hosts were shocked when the 76-year-old said 'p***ed' while discussing cooking.

He was asked how his wife inspired a section of his book and he replied: "Part of the reason for that chapter is I think a lot of people do like cooking on their own, really. And it's sort of a mixture, at the beginning of the chapter... I think a lot of the time I'm sort of having supper on my own and I'm probably a bit p***ed because I've been out somewhere."

Gethin was quick to apologise to the viewers of the 7pm show and said: "We'll leave that language for later on. But yes, carry on - apologies for that." The TV chef apologised for his blunder before the trio continued on with their conversation about all things cooking.

Rick continued: "But basically it's sort of dishes I'd cook that I really, really like but I just want to do for myself because it's a bit tricky to do it for more people." Making a joke out of the situation, Gethin thanked Rick for not swearing again when the chef started talking about drinking while in the kitchen.

"Thank you, Gethin. I'm so, so sorry about that!" Rick replied. Earlier this month, the show had to deal with another awkward situation when Roman Kemp was told off by co-host Alex Jones when he responded rather awkwardly to a question from their guest, Luke Evans.

The Hollywood actor was on the evening BBC show to promote his new play, Backstairs Billy, in which he plays the Queen Mother's devoted servant. Dame Penelope Wilton also stars as the Queen Mother in the play, which is at the Duke of York's Theatre from the end of October and the veteran actress pointed out that 20% of tickets to the show would be available for £10 for "younger people to come to the theatre".

This prompted Luke, known for his Hollywood roles in Beauty and the Beast and The Hobbit trilogy, to ask the Welsh presenter and her co-host, Roman if he perceived themselves as young. He said: "Are you 'young people'? Would you class yourselves as younger people?"

Reacting to this, Alex pointed to herself and scowled as if to say 'no', while nodding as she pointed to her 30-year-old co-star Roman. Responding to Alex's gestures, Roman said: "I didn't want to say anything, I didn't want to say anything!"

"I'm just checking," Luke said innocently before Roman was put in his place as Alex reprimanded him for his cheekiness, prompting him to shout out: "Sorry, sorry!"
