With 18 shades to choose from, Huda Beauty have done it again with an exciting palette that allows you to create a new look everyday

Having been a fan of Huda Kattan for years, I was incredibly lucky (and excited) to interview her about the latest Huda Beauty eyeshadow palette - ‘Pretty Grunge’. The new 18 shade palette is a ‘return to old-school glam with an edgy, modern twist’ - and with Y2K making a comeback this year, it’s one you’ll want at the top of your Christmas list, when it launches at Sephora this November 1st - trust us.

Asking Huda all the questions I’ve wanted to for years, I quizzed the gorgeous beauty influencer and makeup mogul on her ‘pinch me’ moment, earliest memory of makeup, best skincare advice she’s ever been given and her three desert island beauty items - amongst everything else.

Did you ever expect your brand to be such a global success?

Honestly, you never really know if a business will take off, but I believed in myself and knew I had the drive and passion to give it my all, and ten years later, here we are!

I always had big dreams and the determination to match – I wanted to do something I loved, and I believe that's what made the business a success. I also took a lot of risks to make this dream come true; I left my old career behind and trained as a makeup artist. I created my blog [back] in 2010 and took a loan from my sister in 2013 to launch a collection of false lashes exclusively with Sephora; the rest is history. Huda Beauty is a brand built from my passion, my fantastic team, and the loyalty of my followers.

What was your 'pinch me' moment since launching Huda Beauty?

Oh, I've had so many! I think my biggest one will probably have to be the week I launched my lashes. We expected to sell the available quantities of lashes in about a year, but they sold out in a week!

What's your earliest memory of skincare or makeup?

My earliest memory is watching my sister Alya do her makeup; I just fell in love with all the products and techniques. The first products I ever used on myself were actually from her makeup bag!

What's the best skincare advice you've ever been given?

Facial massage! Just a few minutes when you apply your skincare in the morning and at night – there are a lot of tutorials online, and it has many benefits, like releasing muscle tension, lymphatic drainage, and boosting your glow. I find it so relaxing to indulge in a little self-care before a busy day or before bed for a good night's sleep.

Is there anything you wish you could share with your younger self now? Or something to your future self?

To my younger self, I'd say be ready to sacrifice a lot, which sometimes means passing up on awesome opportunities. When you really want something, you have to work for it; you need to push through and never give up. Follow your passion and keep focused on it.

If you had to pick three desert island beauty items, what would they be and why?

Up first would be our Liquid Matte Lipsticks! I'm obsessed with how long-lasting and lightweight the formula is while giving a major colour payoff. I love all our shades, but if I had to choose just one, I'd go for my all-time fave, ‘Bombshell.'

Second would be our Easy Bake and Snatch Pressed Brightening and Setting Powder, as it's so versatile. On low-maintenance days, I only use it under my eyes and on any areas that need a little coverage, but I love it so much that I sometimes use it to contour.

Lastly, I'm a little 90s trend-obsessed lately, especially for ‘grungey’ looks, so it has to be our new Pretty Grunge Palette!

How do you pick the names of the palettes you create?

Our palettes have different inspirations and mood boards, so the name is usually derived from them. Our new Pretty Grunge Palette was inspired by the grunge aesthetic, but I'm a glam girl, so full grunge isn't something I'd wear. So, we put a twist on it! The palette is so versatile with such innovative textures and gorgeously pigmented shades that it can be used to create grunge or glam looks, so we combined the two to make it 'Pretty Grunge’!

Where did the inspiration come from for Pretty Grunge? I automatically think of my 'Avril Lavigne' days, or Kate Moss and Glasto!

Yes! The 90s made a comeback in fashion, and it transcended to beauty. As a brand, we love to put our own twist on beauty trends, so we decided to focus on the grunge aesthetic in general as it's so empowering, which fits perfectly with our brand identity. This year, I decided to accept myself fully, and by doing that, it's made us ready to shake the beauty industry up and break the rules a little bit more! Our Pretty Grunge collection does that as it encourages you to embrace who you are and rebel against and redefine stereotypical beauty standards!

When you had the Pretty Grunge palette in mind, what was the person or character you hoped would embody it - or can the owner be as creative as they like?

That's the beauty of this palette: whoever owns it can be as creative as they like! The important thing is that they are unapologetically themselves. Grunge has this 'devil-may-care' attitude that I hope everyone will adopt when using the collection!

With so many versatile shades, what's the most creative way you've ever seen one of your palettes used?

This literally just happened! I saw someone use the N.Y.M.P.H highlighter to paint a pumpkin gold, and it was just amazing. I have seen quite a lot of people using the shades for highlighter, contour, and their eyebrows! I love seeing how creative people are with our products.

Huda Beauty’s Pretty Grunge palette offers a range of versatile, vampy shades - perfect for anyone wanted to capture 2023's hottest trends like soft goth aesthetic or the ‘latte girl’, not to mention all the new trends coming in 2024.

Housed in a grunge inspired case, wearable rich browns, decadent aubergine tones and sparkly silvers inject an added edge - ready for party season, don’t you think? As always, you can expect highly pigmented pressed powders with cashmere smooth textures - this is the truly modern way to wear a smokey eye. Plus the innovative duo chromes and wet black eye gloss add a certain je ne sais quoi for a contemporary, artist-led makeup in just a few swipes - what more could you ever want?

The Pretty Grunge Palette will be available from Sephora for £62, 1st November 2023 - so what are you waiting for? This is one palette that will see you through party season and beyond.

Talking of the Kattan gals, Huda's sister Mona recently launched four, brand new 'Oudgasmic' inspired fragrances that completely changed my mind on the scent-sational ingredient. To get you in the festive mood, Jo Malone have release a gorgeous Ginger Biscuit Cologne. Oh and how could we forget to tell you about Glossier's You now coming in an XL size - hallelujah.
