Hot on the heels of Diablo 4 Season 2’s incredibly shaky start, some of the game’s most dedicated fans think they’ve found the name and theme for its first full expansion.

A huge success when it initially launched, Diablo 4 has seemingly been fighting endless fires ever since. First you had the character nerfs of patch 1.1.0a, then the poor reception to Diablo 4 Season 1 and most recently the launch of Diablo 4 Season 2 being delayed. Players have proven resilient despite all this, staying with the game throughout all of its online issues, and are still eagerly anticipating the first Diablo 4 DLC. While Activision Blizzard has remained quiet on the details, it hasn’t stopped dataminers from trying to learn more.

Thanks to Blizzard senior vice president and Diablo 4 general manager, Rod Ferguson, we already know that two Diablo 4 expansions are in development. Up until now we’ve had no idea about what this paid-for content will include or how it will differ in comparison to the game’s quarterly seasons. But thanks to the efforts of dataminers, we now have a much better grasp of the content coming in the Diablo 4 DLC.

They've been busy scraping a technical alpha build of the game’s version 2.0 that Activision Blizzard had uploaded for private testing. The details of this scrape has since been revealed in a video published by Russian YouTuber YbuBaka. In the video (which has since been translated in a resetera thread), YbuBaka claims that the first Diablo 4 DLC will be called Lord of the Hatred and will place Mephisto as the new villain of the piece.

In the lore of Diablo, Mephisto is the brother of Bhaal as well as the titular demon. This perfectly aligns with Diablo 4’s penchant for pitting you against the demon family as Mephisto’s daughter, Lilith, serves as the adversary in the base game.

The Diablo 4 DLC datamined details also seemingly confirm that players will visit a new location as part of the Lord of the Hatred expansion – Kurat, last seen in Diablo 2. There’s also mention of a potential new class called the Spiritborn, said to be airborne in nature and a far cry from the Blood Knight fans predicted a while back. Then there’s mention of additional systems involving Mercenaries, Raids and a never-before-mentioned resource called Runestones.

Back from hell

Should the Diablo 4 DLC leaks turn out to be true, we'll will have quite an exciting 2024 to look forward do. The current season – Season of Blood – isn’t expected to end until January (each season runs for a period of roughly three months). However, the fact that these files are already present in a technical build may indicate that we could see the Lord of Hatred Diablo 4 DLC launch next year, and sooner rather than later.

The last Diablo expansion was Diablo 3’s Reaper of Souls, which saw the addition of a new class in the Necromancer and an entirely new location to explore in Westmarch. All of the details above don’t sound a million a miles away from what Activision Blizzard may be planning for Diablo 4’s first expansion, and it's set to be a far more substantial update when compared to a season. Lord of the Hatred is likely to be paid-for rather than free, though, so this is to be expected.
