Celeb Race Across The World's Billy Monger shares emergency which saw him quit

BBC Celebrity Race Across The World's Billy Monger has revealed the real reason that led him and his sister Bonny having to withdraw from the reality contest on Wednesday night.

Fans saw the siblings exit the series in the final episode due to a family crisis back in the UK. In the show's opening scenes, the other contestants received a letter from Billy and Bonny stating: "Dear guys, we're sorry to say a family emergency has meant we've decided to leave the race. Wishing you all the best and good luck! Catch you all back on home soil."

As the race leaders, Billy and his sister were disappointed to leave: "Unfortunately we had a family emergency back in the UK and so me and Bon have decided to leave the race before the last leg. We're obviously gutted, we felt like we were growing into the race. It is sad to be leaving the race but you know, family comes first. It's a shame but I think it's for the best."

Billy later explained on Instagram that they left because a family member 'had a bad accident'. He shared: "Bonny Monger and I were gutted to have to leave the race. A close family member had a bad accident so we had to get home. Thankfully all okay now. We loved the journey!"

Fans were heartbroken at the news that the pair had to withdraw. One said: "Gutted @BillyMonger had to pull out of @AcrossRace - but fair play putting family first." Another added: "was only watching this for Billy and Bonny ffs." Someone else wrote: "Noooo they were my favourites #raceacrosstheworld." A fourth commented: "Nooo... was rooting for Billy and Bon."

A fan quipped: "Gutted about Billy and Bonny! I was hoping they'd win," while someone else said: "Oh dear, bloody well jinxed it! The Mongers are out! At least they went out on top? Always will be the what if of if they could hold that lead. #RaceAcrossTheWorld" Another confessed: "Ah that's a shame, I was rooting for Billy and Bonnie"

However, some fans were frustrated as one vented: "What a let down ... wish they had told us at the start, I was invested - feel like switching off." Another protested: "NO NO NO NO this shouldn't be allowed we all wanted them to win !!"

Good Morning Britain weatherman Alex Beresford was crowned winner alongside his dad Noel, as the first pair to reach the final checkpoint in Tromsø, Norway. McFly drummer Harry Judd and his mum Emma were just four minutes behind them, while All Saints star Melanie Blatt and her mum Helene came third.

Harry and his mum Emma had been the favourites since the beginning. Racing driver Billy Monger was convinced that they were the biggest threat to him and his little sister Bonny, revealing: "They’ve just been at the top from the get-go and they’ve been right in the mix," whilst Noel Beresford, dad of weatherman Alex, agreed, adding: "I always had my eye on Harry and Emma."
