Family Guy has seemingly “gone too far” with a brutal Meghan Markle and Prince Harry joke that most fans missed.

The long-running animated comedy series, created by comedian and actor Seth McFarlane, aired a new episode on Sunday, which showed family man Peter Griffin trying to compare himself to the royal couple, who stepped down from their senior roles in the monarchy in 2020. Harry and Meghan, who share kids Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2, then relocated to the US, as they tried to launch their own Hollywood careers.

After suffering from a serious cash flow problem, Peter tells his friends he’ll “go at it alone” just like the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as the scene focused on an animated Harry and Meghan lounging by their pool at their Santa Monica mansion. A butler appears nearby, and offers Harry a wad of cash.

“Sir, your millions from Netflix for… no one knows what,” he deadpans. “Put it with the rest of them,” Harry replies, as Meghan interrupts: “Babe, time to do our daily $250,000 sponsored Instagram post for Del Taco.” The defeated prince then adds: “I shouldn’t have left the made-up nonsense,” in a jibe at the royal family.

The former royal couple signed a $100 million (£82 million) deal with the streaming giant in 2020, and the joke in Family Guy hints at the lack of content Harry and Meghan have actually produced. But fans of the former royals were uneasy over the duo being easy targets in Hollywood, and suggested that the show was actually poking fun at the monarchy.

While this lacks the bite of South Park, which some people are complaining about, what's important about this is that the two are still a laughingstock in Hollywood and nobody is afraid of saying so. 18 months ago, this wasn't happening.

“I don't think this is the mockery you think it is. Family Guy is showing how much H&M are thriving and how easy it is for them to earn money without getting British commoner's Taxes.. ALSO - the Royal Family is "made up nonsense" -- so true! That's the BURN!” one tweeted.

“‘I shouldn’t have left that made-up nonsense…’ The British Royal Family is royal actually the BUTT of the joke,” another explained. “Meh. Family Guy does this to all celebrities. Everybody laughs, and nobody cares,” one unfazed follower added.

But others were delighted that Harry and Meghan were being lampooned by the comedy show, as one wrote: “ow much more mockery can this couple take.. keep it coming.” While another pointed out the “irony” of Harry being mocked on a show called Family Guy, after he shunned his own relatives to step down from the monarchy. “They are the laughingstock of Hollywood. No one likes them left and right,” another wrote.
