With just two months to go until Christmas Day, Dame Mary Berry has shared a surprising tip for cooking up a festive feast.

The TV cook and former Great British Bake Off judge said people should make preparing Christmas dinner easier on themselves and told fans: “Who cares if you don’t make it all from scratch?”

As the build-up to the festive season begins, the 88-year-old is on a mission to make things more straightforward in the kitchen following the release of her new book, Mary Makes It Easy, which coincides with an upcoming BBC Two TV series of the same name.

With a focus on simplicity, the 120-recipe cook book aims to take the stress out of cooking and Mary says people should “not be ashamed” of buying products that make their lives easier.

She told Good Housekeeping magazine: “It’s so easy to overcomplicate things, particularly at Christmas. The key is to keep your ingredients simple, and each recipe in the book has a photo to guide.

“But also, not to be ashamed of buying things that make cooking easier, whether it’s Panko breadcrumbs or pre-rolled puff pastry. Who cares if you didn’t make it all from scratch?”

And although unexpected from a home cook with decades of experience under her belt, it isn’t the most unusual piece of advice Mary has ever given when it comes to cooking the Christmas dinner.

Last year, she revealed she had a very unconventional method when it comes to making sure her turkey is perfectly cooked on Christmas Day – and it won’t be one most people will have ever thought of before!

Spilling her cooking secret on the Dish podcast to co-hosts Nick Grimshaw and chef Angela Hartnett, Mary revealed she wraps her Christmas turkey in an old sleeping bag so as not to overcook it.

Explaining her bizarre method, she said: "I roast the turkey at home, and I've learned not to overcook it. So many times, even I have overcooked it! This time I'm cooking it without foil, I shall cover it with foil once it's done, then I shall put some tea towels over the top.

"I've got an old sleeping bag that's got no zip and I put that over the top in the corner of the kitchen and then I shall take that in the back of the car to Annabel's (Mary's daughter)."

Mary continued: “Once you take it out of the oven, it goes on cooking. And so you want to insulate that. I shall pop it in the back of the car inside its sleeping bag and we'll be having drinks and lots of jollity until we need to carve it." So, if you've ever wondered how Mary Berry will be spending her Christmas Day, now you know!

The rather unusual procedure on her morning show, and had Alison Hammond calling the idea "genius" later on . "Obviously I'm going to wash the sleeping bag first, but I'm going to try this," she chuckled.
