Apple TV+ is launching a brand-new series set to rival Bridgerton. The Buccaneers is a British period drama that fans of Netflix’s hit corseted drama will not want to miss.

The eight-part series is inspired by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel of the same name, which was released posthumously in 1938. The story follows five wealthy American girls who travel to London in the 1870s to snare themselves an aristocrat from the upper echelons of the capital’s social scene.

It follows a 1995 BBC miniseries based on Wharton’s novel that starred Carla Gugino and Mira Sorvino. The Buccaneers will launch exclusively on Apple TV+ and can be streamed with a subscription for £8.99 a month.

Fans can even watch the series without paying a penny thanks to Apple TV+’s seven-day free trial, which also includes access to hit shows like Ted Lasso, The Morning Show and brand-new drama Lessons in Chemistry. Shoppers can even get Apple TV+ free for three months when buying an eligible device like the new iPhone 15.

What is The Buccaneers about?

In The Buccaneers, a group of fun-loving young American girls – the daughters of America’s new rich – explode into the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s. This kicks off an Anglo-American culture clash as the land of the stiff upper lip is infiltrated by a refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition.

Sent to secure husbands and titles, the buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than that, and saying “I do” is just the beginning. The music-driven series blends 1870s English aristocracy with a modern soundtrack produced by Stella Mozgawa – of US band Warpaint – and packed with songs from today’s top female artists including Taylor Swift, Maggie Rogers, Bikini Kill, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Who is in the cast of The Buccaneers?

The Buccaneers’ ensemble cast is led by Kristine Frøseth as Nan St. George. The American-Norwegian actress is best-known from crime drama The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair and Netflix’s The Society.

The rest of the group of young American girls hopping the pond is played by 13 Reasons Why’s Alisha Boe, Saved By the Bell’s Josie Totah, The Outpost’s Imogen Waterhouse and newcomer Aubri Ibrag. They star alongside Mia Threapleton, who viewers may recognise from Channel 4 drama I Am Ruth, in which she starred alongside her mother, Kate Winslet.

They are joined by SAG Award-winning Mad Men star Christina Hendricks as Mrs. St. George and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again actor Josh Dylan as Lord Richard Marable.
