Max George has revealed what the late Tom Parker said about Maisie Smith before their relationship even began.

The Wanted singer reflected on how his bandmate, who died aged 33 of a brain tumour in March 2022, made a sweet comment about the EastEnders star while she was competing in Strictly Come Dancing. Maisie starred alongside Max in the 18th series of the BBC reality show in 2020, which is where the now-lovers first met. The 22-year-old made it to the final but lost out on the coveted Glitterball Trophy to Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse, after failing to outdo their stunning routine to Queen's, The Show Must Go On.

Despite his dance background, Max performed considerably worse in the glitzy contest and was eliminated on Week 3 alongside partner Dianne Buswell. He left the show with a lasting impression of one of his rivals, however, unaware that they'd one day be on the same team.

"When Maisie was on Strictly on the very first night, Tom said, 'The girl from EastEnders is well cute, isn't she?'" he told New! magazine. "I replied, 'She's dead nice mate - she's lovely.'"

At the time, Max was in a relationship with Stacey Giggs and reportedly had little interaction with Maisie. The two were reunited, however, on the Strictly Come Dancing Tour, which gave them an opportunity to reportedly grow closer. In the summer of 2022, they joined the entire Strictly cast to travel to Portugal for a group holiday. They were later spotted kissing a plane en route to a romantic getaway to Crete, and by the time it was announced that Maisie was to participate in Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, they had gone Instagram official.

The age gap between the pair has caused quite the controversy, with many folks criticizing the Wanted star as being too old to date Maisie.

"People don’t understand what goes on behind closed doors in a relationship, and I think they also forget that I’m a consenting 21-year-old woman who’s actually been working longer than Max!" Maisie said.

“I don’t notice the age difference and neither do my friends or family. My mum Julia is the one who reads through all the comments. I got a message from her yesterday, saying: ‘Just ignore them, you two were made for each other.’

"I think that just puts it into perspective. I really don’t care what a random person thinks of my relationship when everyone I do care about is incredibly supportive. I’ve been in the business long enough to know you have to have a thick skin.”
