When you're on holiday, there's nothing nicer than sitting in the heat and opening a cold drink to cool yourself down, taking that first sip and feeling refreshed.

One holiday favourite drink of choice for Brits abroad is a cold can of Fanta - whether it be orange, lemon or fruit twist, it's a popular choice and although it's available in the UK, it's widely agreed it for some reason just tastes so much better on holiday. If you have ever wondered why you can't replicate the same blissful feeling when drinking a Fanta in the UK compared to when on holiday - we've finally found out why.

Although the weather may play a huge part in why it just hits the spot so well while on holiday, it's actually because they're made differently in different countries and it's mostly down to the sugar.

In the UK, when the sugar tax was announced, Fanta creators Coca-Cola had to change the amount of sugar that was added to the fizzy drink and it was cut by a third. It's reported that Fanta sold in the UK now has a sugar content of 4.6g per 100ml since 2017, compared to more than 5g before.

Whereas in other European countries, the levels of sugar have been altered, but to different levels, meaning there are different Fanta variations across Europe. For example, Spain and Portugal have similar sugar levels to UK version, but Italian Fanta has a whopping 11.8g per 100ml, making it three times higher than the UK. In Greece it's reported to be 8g, and Germany is 7.6g.

Interestingly, Fanta in Italty contains 12 per cent of orange juice, whereas in the UK it's just 3.7 per cent - another reason why it can taste much better abroad. According to LadBible, Coca Cola said: "We produce Fanta Orange across Europe and the juice content may vary in different countries.

"Throughout Europe, Fanta Orange is sweetened with either sugar or a combination of sugar and sweeteners. We are constantly working to reduce the sugar content in our drinks. For this reason, you may notice that the content of sugar or sweeteners in the drink varies from country to country. In Germany, for example, we launched Fanta Orange with reduced sugar content without any sweeteners."

However they do admit that a lot of it can be down to psychological factors of being on holiday too. They added: "The basic ingredients and process used to make Coca‑Cola are the same in all countries, although people perceive taste in very different ways. It is possible for the same soft drink to vary slightly in taste due to other factors such as the temperature at which it is consumed, the foods with which it is consumed, or the conditions in which it is stored prior to consumption."
