Quality Street fans say 'part of Christmas gone' after Nestle makes major change

If there's one thing we can all agree on, it's that we want to do our bit for the planet - whether it be making sure we correctly recycle, switching from paper bags to plastic, or buying reusable products.

But it's no secret that change isn't easy to accept, even when it's for a very noble reason. This is perhaps why Nestle's Quality Street has been met with backlash over a big alteration they've made to their tubs of chocolates. And even though the change isn't actually new, and was first introduced back in October 2022, it seems people are still having a rather difficult time getting used to it.

Last year, the confectionery giant revealed that they would be swapping their iconic shiny foil and plastic wrappers on the sweets for a recyclable form of waxed paper, which has a much duller appearance. Fans of the chocolates were disappointed by the news, and many haven't let this feeling go, if a recent post is anything to go by.

The company recently took to Facebook to mark Recycle Week with a post about the change they made, and it's been met with criticism from their followers. They wrote: "We're celebrating a positive change this Recycle Week...now your favourites are wrapped in recyclable paper! What colourful crafts & quality creations will you be making next with your wrappers?"

Alongside this, they shared a photo of a box of Quality Street and the wrappers from the new sweets taken off to make the recycle arrow symbols on a countertop. Dozens of people have since responded, sharing their thoughts with many admitting they don't like the wrappers.

One person said: "Don't like the new wrappers. Afraid they just get binned as I can't keep disposing of a few wrappers. They blow away. Before I could use them for crafting." While another commented: "So disappointed that the wrapping has been changed. Bring back tins and get rid of the plastic tubs!" Someone else agreed, writing: "Don't like the wrappers, doesn't feel like a special treat when you opening the tub. A real letdown. Won't buy them again as they are no longer special."

A different user even went as far as to claim that the change had taken away some of the magic of Christmas, saying: "Sorry but I prefer the foil wrappers. They were part of Christmas. I don't like the new wrappers. They are not quality." A fellow fan added: "Do you ask your customers opinions when changing wrappers? It's just that the shiny wrappers were part of Christmas, these I think you would have to agree are pretty dull."

The Quality Street team responded to some of the top comments on the post, explaining the reason for the change. They wrote: "We have taken a lot of time and care to make the finish of the new wrappers as beautiful as before, and have kept the colours the same, so you'll easily be able to spot your favourites in the mix! Because we are using a completely new material, the wrappers do look different. However, we hope you'll agree that being able to place them in your household recycling more than makes up for this."

They added that the previous wrappers were compostable, but not recyclable, which is why they introduced the new ones: "The cellulose wrapper was made from a material that is home-compostable but not recyclable. Because less than 10% of households in the UK have the necessary home composting facilities, we knew we needed a solution that would make it easy for everyone to be able to recycle their wrappers."
