John Fury recalls smashing man's head off pool table in row over unpaid debt

John Fury, dad to world heavyweight champion Tyson and top influencer boxer Tommy, has revealed he smashed a man's head off a pool table during a row.

The former boxer has had a colourful life, and spent time behind bars as his eldest son Tyson rose through the ranks as a professional. He has been a free man for the entirety of Tommy's professional career, but has regaled audiences with tales of his more wild days as a younger man.

And the elder Fury has told all in a new book When Fury Takes Over . In one particularly outlandish story, he has told of how one feud over an unpaid debt led to him smashing a man's head into a pool table while looking for his payment.

"Years ago, I ended up losing my temper in a pool hall," he wrote. "I’d spent weeks tracking this guy down who owed me money. I said to him, ‘You’ve got my money, it’s time to pay me back.’ ‘The only thing you’re going to get from me is a good hiding,’ he answered. "I looked at him and shook my head. ‘Look, you don’t know what you’re dealing with, you’re not in my class. Give me the money you owe me so I can walk out that door, otherwise you’re in trouble.’

"The man in the pool room threw a straight shot at me, and the next thing happening in his world was that his head was being banged repeatedly on the wood-veneered edge of the pool table, the overhead light swinging violently, blood discolouring the royal blue felt a deep purple.

"I was aware of muffled voices, they seemed a long way away, as if they were at the end of a tunnel, telling me to stop. Then they jumped on me, perhaps ten people pinning me down. The man was stretchered away while I, thanks to the no-holds-barred contribution of Mr Hyde, was picked up in a police van before being carted off to jail to ruminate on my actions behind bars. "In the aftermath of this violence, I felt an overwhelming sense of shame and contrition. How could you do that to this man? I’d ask myself over and over again."

Fury has emerged as one of the more polarising figures in British boxing since, stealing the limelight from his sons on countless occasions. He regularly removes articles of clothing during Tommy's fight build-ups, and has also got into shouting matches with Tyson's opponents including Deontay Wilder.
