The Kansas City Chiefs have revealed a new unexpected position for Patrick Mahomes, as he's been named as the backup punter for the team.

Mahomes is considered the best active quarterback in the NFL, and even at the age of 28 some feel he could rival Tom Brady as the greatest of all time. Therefore, it seems a bizarre decision to list him as a potential punter, but Mahomes is clearly their best option with Tommy Townsend hurt.

Townsend suffered a hyperextended knee injury in Week 6 against the Denver Broncos, and clips were shared this week of Mahomes punting the ball in practice. Chiefs assistant coach Dave Toub officially named Mahomes as their backup, and the quarterback reacted on social media.

Toub was asked by reporters who would punt the ball for the Chiefs in the absence of Townsend, and he gave an unexpected response. "[Mahomes] is our backup punter," Toub said. "He could do it. He shows me all the time he's out there [at practice]. Boom. That guy, it's unbelievable."

The Chiefs then shared clips of Mahomes punting the ball, with the caption: "Can confirm." Fans on social media then went wild at the prospect that Mahomes could actually be used as the Chiefs punter, and the quarterback sent a message to his followers.

"I been trying to tell ya'll!" Mahomes posted. Recently retired NFL legend JJ Watt then replied to Mahomes, as he wrote: "We got 6,000 videos of you throwing no-look darts and 70-yarders in pregame, yet not one single punt on film?!"

Mahomes then gave another comedic response as he replied: "Waiting for the right moment! Patience is key!" Regardless of Mahomes' ability, the Chiefs aren't a team that uses their punter often due to the strength of their offense.

However, when they host the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7 there is a possibility that Mahomes could fail to convert on third down but then remain on the field to punt the football. The Chiefs have only punted the ball 18 times this season, while the New Orleans Saints lead the league with 35 punts.

The Chiefs are 5-1 heading into Week 7, with their only loss of the season coming on the opening day when they were beaten at home against the Detroit Lions. They have had some close games this season, but the Super Bowl champions continue to prove why they're No. 1.
