Strictly Come Dancing's Angela Rippon slashed leg open moments before live show

Angela Rippon slashed open one of her legs with a dangerously pointy pair of high heels minutes before she was due to take to the ballroom floor on Strictly Come Dancing.

The 79-year-old broadcasting icon has been wowing TV fans with her impressive dance routines and incredible flexibility. And the veteran presenter has been suffering for her art as she has explained she sustained a nasty injury before she was to dance in the long-running BBC dance competition.

Angela, who is partnered with 28-year-old dance professional Kai Widdrington for the 2023 season, was getting ready to dance during last weekend’s live shows when she decided to run through a last-minute rehearsal. But while she was twirling and skipping around, she accidentally cut herself with the heel of her shoe - with minutes to go before she was due on stage in front of cameras.

Clearly a professional, Angela decided that the show had to go on and with the help of some medics got herself patched up and ready to be on stage on time. The TV star has shared her account of her ordeal - and success - in a new article.

Writing for The Telegraph, she wrote: “Well Saturday’s Strictly is one that I won’t forget in a hurry – and I’m not talking about my shoe falling off or doing the splits. But the drama before I got onto the dance floor is something I don’t want to live through again.

“Before any of us go live onto the studio floor to perform for the judges, we have about 15 minutes off stage to do a final run-through. With just over five minutes to go, Kai and I were doing a last-minute revision of our steps, when my foot stuck on a sticky patch on the floor. When I looked down, my leg was bleeding from a cut on my right shin. The razor-sharp edge of my high-heeled dance shoe had sliced off a bit of flesh while I was doing a twisting manoeuvre.

“Immediately the Strictly machine swung into action. The medic was called. I knew the cut was not bad enough to stop me taking to the dance floor – but not in the next five minutes.”

Angela added : “Out in the studio, everything continued without a hitch. No one in the audience, including the judges, had a clue about what was unfolding backstage. The show went on! What a team.”

She went on to give even more details of the incident saying that the Strictly costume team also came running to her rescue. They helped her get out of her tights and also had to cut her out of her skirt, while a make-up artist worked on covering up the injury with make-up after a medic had successfully staunched the bleeding. She was then sent out in time for her own slot and the performance itself went without a hitch.

For week five of the contest, Angela and Kai will be performing an Argentine tango and fans will see them dancing to the song Tanguera by Sexteto Mayor. Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday night at 6:40pm on BBC One and via the BBC iPlayer.
