All the Strictly pro couples destroyed by 'curse' - divorce, jealousy, betrayal
It may look glitzy and glamourous but the professional dancers and celebrities who go on Strictly Come Dancing are often quizzed about whether their relationships will survive the show. Indeed, since the TV contest launched nearly 20 years ago in 2004, several romances have floundered under the glitterball.
From alleged affairs to a devastating divorce that left one star needing counselling, we shine a spotlight on the pros whose relationships have been destroyed by the so-called 'curse' during the show's 19-year history…
Katya and Neil Jones
I’m a Celebrity star and comedian Seann Walsh was paired with professional dancer Katya Jones but the couple, who were both in relationships with other people, were caught kissing outside a London pub in October 2018. Their kiss caused a huge scandal that still has people talking to this day.
She immediately apologised to her husband, insisting the 'drunken mistake' was 'no reflection' of their marriage and life carried on. Seann wasn’t so lucky - his long term partner Rebecca Humphries ended their relationship. However, he attempted to play down his mistake, claiming there had been cracks in the relationship before his kiss with Katya.
Then in 2019 a year after the kissing scandal, Katya and Neil announced they were getting a divorce although Neil said it wasn’t the kiss that led to them parting ways. During an interview with in 2020, Neil said: "We were moving in different directions but we are friends again now. Katya is a great girl and I've got nothing bad to say about her."
EastEnders' Jake Wood's snap of son has fans pointing out the pair's likenessKaren and Kevin Clifton
Karen and Kevin joined the show as a couple in 2012 before tying the knot in July 2015 but rumours their relationship was struggling began to circulate in 2016 after Kevin was partnered with singer . However, both Louise and Kevin have always denied any romantic involvement.
The following year, numerous reports suggested Karen and Kevin's marriage had become 'strained' blaming it on their hectic schedules and at the end of the 2017 series, Kevin publicly thanked his wife for 'putting up with me’. Then the following March they confirmed they were splitting up and Kevin has since moved on with his 2018 celeb partner Stacey Dooley.
Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone
They were in a long-term romance when the fifth series of Strictly kicked off in 2007, but split soon after Flavia was partnered with ex EastEnders star, Matt Di Angelo. Flavia and Matt started dating once the Strictly series concluded and were together for three years. But it wasn’t to be and in 2010 Flavia moved on with another celeb partner, actor Jimi Mistry who she is now married to. Flavia is step mum to Elin Leonard Mistry, Jimi’s daughter from a previous relationship.
Vincent and Flavia were a couple for 11 years and are still professional partners and friends. In 2018 they told Hello how Flavia had invited Vincent to spend Christmas with her and her husband, actor Jimi Mistry, if his wife Susan and their two sons couldn’t make it to London from their home in Northern Ireland.
Brendan Cole and Camilla Dallerup
Cast your mind back to the very first series of Strictly in 2004 and that’s when the infamous Strictly Curse was born. Brendan Cole and fellow pro Camilla ended their engagement amid rumours he and celebrity partner Natasha Kaplinsky had become close. While the newsreader and Brendan both denied having an affair at the time, in 2018 Brendan hinted that he did get involved with Natasha but only once his marriage was over.
"I didn’t cross any lines with Natasha,” he told the Daily Mail. “I was single. Camilla had ended the relationship very early on in the series so what happened happened after that. It was a harrowing time - winning the show as much as my friendship with Natasha. On the other hand it was like, Holy Moses. It can ruin a marriage so easily."
