Meryl Streep split statement in full as she separates from husband of 45 years

Meryl Streep and her husband Don Gummer have announced they have split after 45 years of marriage, with the actress releasing an emotional statement about the news.

The Devil Wears Prada star, 74, revealed she has actually been living a separate life from Don for years. In a statement given to The Mirror today, Meryl's representative said: "Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart."

Meryl was first introduced to Don by her brother back in 1978 and they tied the knot that same year. The former couple share four children together - Henry Wolfe, 43; Mamie Gummer, 40; Grace Gummer, 37; and Louisa Jacobson, 30. They also have five grandchildren.

After tying the knot, Don and Meryl moved their family into a lavish private estate in Connecticut in 1985. After living in their $1.8million (£1.4million) private estate in Connecticut, they then bought a $3million (£2.4million) mansion in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in 1990. However, it wasn't long before the family moved back to Connecticut.

The former couple kept their love life largely out of the spotlight. But when asked about her marriage in 2002, she said that the secret behind their long union was "goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while."

Speaking to Vogue, Meryl added: "There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It's always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life."

Meryl's split from Don has shocked fans after she was spotted wearing her wedding ring at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 this week. And five years ago at the 2018 Oscars, the couple even posed together, despite them reportedly being separated at the time.
