Georgia Harrison has 'serious conversation about running as Labour Party MP'

Love Island star Georgia Harrison has spoken about becoming a Labour MP, a move which she says has been backed by other politicians in the party.

It comes after the 28-year-old campaigned for better laws around image-based sexual violence. The star was a victim of this herself when former partner, Stephen Bear, shared an intimate video of the pair without her consent. Georgia did not know that CCTV was recording her at Bear's home. Bear was subsequently found guilty of voyeurism and is currently serving a 21-month jail sentence. e

As part of her work campaigning around image-based violence, Georgia discussed violence against women and girls with Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer and Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper. And her political work doesn't end there, as she also attended a Labour conference held last moth in Liverpool.

The reality star, who has previously appeared in TOWIE, told The Sun: "I had serious conversations with a couple of Labour MPs about if I could run for Essex, and they said it would be possible. They said if I was being serious about running for an MP it is something that they would support me with. I think also for little girls growing up seeing someone like me running for an MP would be quite inspiring."

Georgia added that she wants to see more normal people getting into politics. And despite being warned that she'd spend a lot of time talking about people's bins, the star was not put off.

The Online Safety Bill passed its final Parliamentary debate and is now ready to become law following a campaign that Georgia was involved with. And as part of the new legalisation, it will be easier to charge and convict someone who shares intimate images without consent.

This differs to the current rules which state that it needs to be proven that the accused intended to cause distress. But once the bill becomes law, the perpetrator can face six months in prison if it's proven they shared the content without consent. If it is proven that they intended to cause distress, alarm or humiliation or to obtain sexual gratification, then a two-year jail sentence is possible. And that's not all, if social media companies do not act rapidly to prevent and remove illegal content they could be fined billions and bosses may even face jail time themselves.

The government website quotes Georgia as she discusses the introduction of the Online Safety Bill. She says: "Violence against women and girls is so common, with one in three women in the UK having experienced online abuse or harassment. The Online Safety Bill is going to help bring this to an end, by holding social media companies accountable to protect women and girls from online abuse."

On Tuesday Harrison, who featured in the ITV documentary Revenge Porn: Georgia Vs Bear, was honoured with an activist gong at the Glamour Women of the Year awards.
