The Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt has issued an apology after an unearthed clip of her "fat-shaming" a waitress remerged.

Back in 2012, Emily, who is now 40 years of age, appeared on much-loved UK chat show The Jonathan Ross Show. While appearing on the hit programme, the famous British actress recalled how she was recognised while dining out.

Talking about the moment she was spotted, Emily spoke of how she was dining at US chain restaurant Chilis while filming the movie Looper, when the waitress recognised her. Speaking to chat show host Jonathan, Emily said: "The girl who was serving us was enormous, you know I think she got freebie meals at Chilis."

And now Emily has addressed the unearthed comments she made, with the American citizen admitting she was "appalled" when she watched the interview back. Releasing a statement to People Magazine, Emily said: "i just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12-years ago.

"I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show. I’ve always considered myself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone so whatever possessed me to say anything like this in that moment is unrecognizable to me or anything I stand for."

Emily's character of Emily Charlton in 2006 movie The Devil Wears Prada was famously fatphobic when she made comments about Andrea Sachs, played by Anne Hathaway, being "fat". Her character was also famed for eating a cube of cheese whenever she felt faint while dieting ahead of Paris Fashion Week.

Fans have since reacted to the unearthed clip of Emily's comments in 2012, with many taking to social media to air their thoughts. "Emily Blunt being blatantly fatphobic wasn’t on my 2023 bingo card but here we are," penned one who shared the clip on X, formerly known as Twitter.

But some defended the star. One person said: "It’s a joke from a decade ago, get over it lol." While another said: "It’s literally from 2012 get a grip."

Although someone else weighed in when they said: "FFS just bc this was in 2012 doesn’t mean it was okay to talk down about larger ppl back then. Don’t f**king 'good ol’ days' fatshaming."
