TUI plane 'skids off' airport runway in Storm Babet weather chaos

A TUI flight coming back from Corfu, Greece, seemingly skidded off the runway amidst the rain and wind of Storm Babet - leading to the entire airport being shut down.

Passengers on the flight have shared terrifying footage and photos of their aircraft which was left stranded off the side of the runway at Leeds Bradford Airport this afternoon. Since then, they have all safely been removed from the stuck airplane, but the airport is now shut as they try and deal with the incident.

The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, was travelling from the island of Corfu, Greece. It is understood it slid off the runway onto the grass banking, after landing at 1.53pm. The local Fire and Rescue service said there have been no reported injuries on the plane and no fire either.

The airport's emergency siren was activated and emergency services, including multiple ambulances and specialist resources from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and Yorkshire Ambulance Services’ Hazardous Area Response Team, were called to the scene. The airport has since been shut, as they work with the airline and emergency teams to resolve the issue, and make it safe - as all passengers have been safely removed from the plane.

TUI have since apologised and removed all bags from the plane, as of 7pm this evening. They are now trying to support customers in their onwards flights and other TUI customers due to fly out today, will be ferried to Manchester where they will fly out as planned, the airline said.
