Covid infections are falling with autumn peak possibly 'over', new data shows

Covid cases have fallen across England and Wales for the second week in a row, suggesting the rise in cases seen in early Autumn are on their way out.

There were 12,123 new cases of Covid reported in England in the week up to October 14, according to the latest government data.
That works out at 21.4 cases for every 100,000 people in the country. That’s down from 28.5 cases per 100,000 people a week earlier, and from a peak rate of 29.6 on October 2.

Meanwhile, in Wales there were 369 new cases in the week leading up to October 14, at a rate of 11.6 for every 100,000 people. That’s down slightly from a rate of 12.4 a week earlier. It suggests that the rise in Covid cases this Autumn have peaked. You can see how many case of Covid there were in your local area using our interactive map:

Great Yarmouth is the current Covid hot-spot in England and Wales. There were 54.4 new cases there for every 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 14. Chesterfield had the next highest rate at 49.6 per 100,000 people. Scarborough was next with 45.1 cases per 100,000, followed by Isle of Wight (44.3), Fylde (43.1), Torbay (41.8), and Newcastle-under-Lyme (41.7).

It comes after experts warned Britain can expect to see further spikes in Covid over the winter. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging eligible people to come forward for their coronavirus, as well as flu vaccinations to help limit the spread.

As part of the update, Doctor Mary Ramsay, director of public health programmes at the UKHSA, warned that things are expected to get more serious. She said: “As we enter the colder months and people begin to mix more indoors, we can expect to see further increases in COVID-19 alongside the usual increases we see in other winter respiratory viruses like flu.

“We are monitoring rates closely and reminding people that when you have respiratory symptoms you should avoid mixing with others, especially those more vulnerable.” The upturn in Covid cases since the summer has been linked to the arrival of the Eris and Pirola strains of the disease that were first detected in the UK in July and August respectively.

As part of the UKHSA update, Dr Ramsay also urged people to come forward for their Covid and flu jabs if eligible. UKHSA analysis has found that last year's Autumn Covid booster jab programme prevented over 14,000 hospitalisations - and any corresponding deaths. Hopes remain that this year's will prove as effective.
