Noddy Holder secretly battled throat cancer and was diagnosed five years ago, his wife Suzan announced.

The Slade legend has been living with the condition for half a decade and has received a new trial round of chemotherapy which has helped him fight the disease. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Noddy who found fame with the song Merry Xmas Everyone has remained his upbeat self.

His wife said that his initial prognosis was far from good but he agreed, along with staff from The Christie Hospital in Manchester to take part in experimental treatment. But this had no guarantees of working. Thankfully, the star reacted positively to the treatment.

Over the course of the past five years, he has continued to work and earlier this year, played a gig in Dorset with fellow musician, Tom Seals. Sharing the heatingbreaking news, Suzan said: "Five years ago we were given the devastating news that he had oesophageal cancer and only had six months to live. I'm sorry if that comes as a bit of a shock; it came as a total bombshell to us too."

She went on to write for Great British Life: "We coped with it the only way we could, by hunkering down, sticking together and doing everything we could to survive it." At the time of his diagnosis, the family only told Noddy's immediate family and their closest friends. Despite this, his wife has refused to apologise to those they did not tell and said she only apologises to the people she did tell who were "forced to suffer pain".

While a fourth typed: "I was at the Lowry when Noddy told the audience of his recent cancer scare, you could tell by the emotion in his voice that he was grateful as he said due to the man upstairs and the excellent staff at the Christie that he was still with us."
