Aaron Ramsdale opens up on "suffering and hurting" over losing Arsenal No.1 spot
Aaron Ramsdale has admitted he is “suffering and hurting” and fears his shock Arsenal demotion might see him “fall by the wayside" of the England scene.
Ramsdale has become Mikel Arteta ’s second-choice Premier League keeper after losing his place to David Raya after the opening four games of the season. And it is clear Ramsdale will look to leave the Emirates if he cannot regain his place in Arteta’s first-choice starting eleven.
The 25-year-old knows his England days will be numbered if he continues to sit on the club bench and he is desperate to go to Euro 2024 with Gareth Southgate ’s squad.
Ramsdale was with the England squad over the past couple of weeks but it was Crystal Palace ’s Sam Johnstone who got the nod for the friendly against Australia before Jordan Pickford came back in for the Euro qualifier against Italy.
“I need to get back into my club team to keep getting picked (for England) and keep giving the manager a headache because if I'm not, then that's an easier decision for him,” declared Ramsdale.

“It is the first time I have found myself in this situation. The manager here (Southgate) is brilliant, he trusts the players he's worked with before.
“You'll see Kalvin (Phillips) and Harry (Maguire) haven't played the most amount of minutes but when they step up for England and are given the opportunity, they perform.
“So if if that's the case for myself and I do get shown that trust to play another game if I haven't played for my club, then I will have to repay him.

“First and foremost, I've got to give the manager a decision and be available to be picked and that is by getting back into my club team. If that's not the case, then we'll see in three or four weeks time.”
And Ramsdale also gave an invite into the dynamic at the Emirates where he has formed a bond with the man who is threatening his Arsenal future.
Ramsdale explained: “There are days when I come in and I'm down because of the situation and he picks me up and, for whatever reason, there might be a day where he's down and even though I'm suffering and hurting for not playing, I have to stand up and be able to push him and make sure he's ready if he if he's picked to play.”
And at least Ramsdale keeps a smile on his face, chuckling when his dad’s response to a Jamie Carragher remark was brought up. After Carragher saw a clip of Ramsdale applauding a Raya save, the Sky Sports pundit said he “laughed” and he “thought it was like when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person. He's absolutely devastated with that really.”
Later that night, Ramsdale’s father, Nick, sent Carragher a social media message, saying: “You are a disgrace!! Show some class!! My lad has.”
As he left the England camp, Ramsdale said: “He was on a golf trip in Spain with 19 other lads from the local pub! To be honest, I wasn't too mad at him, he didn't say anything out of turn, it just wasn't helpful for the situation, he knew that. He obviously just had a few too many on the golf course!”
