A sick paedophile who targeted underage girls for sex whilst using his neighbour’s Wi-Fi led police to inadvertently swoop in on the innocent man next door.

Richard Wynne used the network after claiming his own wasn’t working properly before he asked for intimate pictures from who he thought was a 13-year-old girl. But the 48-year-old was actually chatting to undercover police, who secured a 200-page transcript of the vile interactions. After tracking the WiFi to the wrong house in the sleepy village in Powys, Wales and initially confronting the wrong man, officers soon realised the real criminal was next door. They seized Wynne’s mobile phone before discovering he had thrown a second device from his window moments before they arrived.

Mold Crown Court heard he was under a Sexual Harm Prevention Order stating his devices should have been registered with the police, but Wynne had unmonitored profiles on social media including Snapchat. Officers also found ‘a number of indecent images’ including more than 220 photos and nine movies - including vile sex abuse of girls as young as six.

Judge Recorder Simon Mills jailed him for three years and ten months and told him: “You repeatedly asked this girl for pictures of herself in a state of undress in what can only be described as a depraved conversation. You did at least some of this using your neighbour's internet which he kindly let you use because you told him yours was out of order. Just imagine how distressing and terrifying it must have been when the police came to his door suspecting him of these crimes. He wouldn't have had a clue what was going on.”

Wynne, who was also subject to a suspended prison sentence at the time, pleaded guilty to attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child and making indecent photographs of a child.
