Cost of living payments worth up to £1,350 will be paid in 2023 and 2024 to help struggling families.

The money is being awarded to low-income, vulnerable and pensioner households as bills continue to rise.

There will be £900 going to those on certain means-tested benefits, £300 to pensioners and £150 to people claiming disability benefits.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has today announced more detail on the payments schedule - although exact dates have yet to be confirmed.

The first payments will start in spring 2023, with the final amounts due to hit accounts one year later in 2024.

Cost of Living Payment (means-tested benefits) - £900

More than eight million UK households claiming means-tested benefits will get £900 spread out over three payments.

Each instalment will be a slightly different amount, with the first payment due to arrive in spring 2023.

  • £301 – first Cost of Living Payment – spring 2023

  • £300 – second Cost of Living Payment – autumn 2023

  • £299 – third Cost of Living Payment – spring 2024

You’ll have to be claiming the following benefits to be eligible:

The DWP has not yet confirmed when exactly you’ll need to be claiming these benefits by in order to receive the cash.

The previous cost of living payment for those on means-tested benefits was worth £650 and was split into two instalments.

The first payment, worth £326, was issued in July for most households, while the second one, worth £324, was sent in November.

Tax Credit households were paid slightly later - the £326 was sent in September and the £324 followed in November.

Disability Cost of Living Payment – £150

Another payment worth £150 will be awarded to households claiming certain disability benefits.

This will be sent sometime in summer 2023 - again, no exact date has been announced yet.

You might be eligible for this payment if you claim:

  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Scottish Disability Benefits
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Constant Attendance Allowance
  • War Pension Mobility Supplement

The DWP has not yet confirmed the eligibility dates for when you need to be claiming these benefits by.

This year, those receiving the £150 Disability Cost of Living Payment received the money in September and October.

Pensioner Cost of Living Payment – £300

Pensioners receiving a Winter Fuel Payment will also get another £300 on top of this through the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment.

The Winter Fuel Payment is worth up to £300, depending on your age and living situation - meaning some households will get up to £600.

The Government has said this payment will arrive in winter 2023. Winter Fuel Payments are normally paid in November and December.

The full eligibility criteria for the 2023/24 Winter Fuel Payments has not yet been announced, but you can read more about this year's scheme here.

Work and Pensions Secretary, Mel Stride said: “We are sticking by our promise to protect the most vulnerable and these payments, worth hundreds of pounds, will provide vital support next year for those on the lowest incomes.

“The Government’s wider support package has already helped more than eight million families as we continue to deal with the global consequences of Putin’s illegal war and the aftershocks of the pandemic.”
