Four women have died after a driver lost control of their car and ploughed into them on the side of a road.

The driver lost control of the vehicle on the Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu on Tuesday night. They first hit two sets of parked cars before crashing into the four women who were standing on the side of the road.

Two more people were rushed to hospital but their conditions are unknown. Witnesses told local media that several bodies could be seen strewn across the highway in the aftermath of the crash.

Fire crews and police officers continue to work at the scene, with a large cordon put in place. The driver has not yet been named, ABC7 reported.

"This one's tough. There's just a lot of carnage, just metal carnage," Los Angeles County fire captain Sheila Kelliher Berkoh said. "Anytime you come and there's four bodies that didn't survive, that's a tough one to watch."
