Disabled comedian Adam Hills has hit out at Australian cabbies after he was refused a ride from Sydney Airport by two drivers due to his desired journey being too short.

The 53-year old, who was born in the city without a right foot, often pokes fun at his disability during his shows. The Last Leg star wasn't happy, however, after flying in from Melbourne to have a new prosthetic leg fitted at a clinic just over two miles away.

After the two failed attempts to get a ride, Hills said he was forced to withdraw enough cash to pay double the cost of the fare to make a cabbie's trip worthwhile. "What bothers me is they don't know how disabled I am," he said.

He continued to Yahoo: "I can move around quite well but what if it was someone with more of a disability? I get the guy has been waiting there for two hours, but also, that’s not my fault the prosthetic clinic is close to the airport."

Frustrated Hills said he later raised the issue with authorities at the taxi rank, only to be told there is little that can be done about the influx of "rogue drivers" in Sydney. As a result, he was forced to fork out $40 (£21) for a $21 (£11) ride.

Earlier this year Hills spoke of his dream in playing in a Rugby World Cup in Channel 4 documentary, Adam Hills: Grow Another Foot. The Aussie, who has even established his own charity Physical Disability Rugby League team (PDRL) in Cheshire, explained: "When I was a kid, the idea of playing in a Rugby League World Cup was pretty much impossible. Now I'm actually going to get my chance.

"I don't know how I became Mr Rugby League! I've put my comedy career on hold. I turn down massive gigs because it's on training nights. Everyone around me can see how obsessed I am by it."

Hills also presents the sport's Super League coverage on the channel, which the BAFTA nominee likened to having sex. Risking the wrath of wife Ali, he joked: "Covering Super League for us is a bit like having sex. Last year we did it for the first time, we didn’t really know what we were doing but we had fun. This year hopefully we will get a bit better at it!"
