Liverpool will be targeting a return to winning ways in the Premier League when they play Everton on Saturday in their first game after the international break.

Prior to a host of his players heading off on international duty, Jurgen Klopp's team were caught up in a VAR storm amid their 2-1 away defeat at Tottenham. They followed that up with a dramatic 2-2 draw at Brighton, leaving the Reds fourth and just three points off the top.

However, the clubs are asking fans with spare tickets for the Merseyside derby to offer them to fellow supporters. Thousands won't be able to attend the clash after it was confirmed the top tier of the new Anfield Road Stand will remain closed for the rest of 2023.

But it has been have confirmed that both will now return, with England named as fourth official for Brentford's clash with Burnley on Saturday. Cook meanwhile will be assistant to Michael Oliver at the Sheffield United vs Manchester United game.

'Angry' Sheikh Jassim could target Liverpool

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani is "very disappointed and angered" after his bid to buy Manchester United from the Glazers failed, with the Qatari banker now linked with Liverpool.

The Daily Mail has reported that Sheikh Jassim is "very, very disappointed and angered at how this has played out," having put aside around £6.57 billion to buy the club and then invest heavily in it. As a result, he has been tipped to try and target Liverpool next.

It was reported last year that owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) had put the Reds up for sale. They subsequently admitted in a statement that they would "consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club".

VAR for Everton clash oversaw infamous derby

David Coote will be on VAR duty when Liverpool host Everton on Saturday, having been at the centre of controversy in a Merseyside derby three seasons ago.

Coote was the VAR when Liverpool drew 2-2 with Everton at Goodison Park in October 2020, with the Reds demanding an investigation over two highly dubious decisions. Liverpool were seething that Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford escaped punishment after a challenge that injured Virgil van Dijk.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was furious that Pickford's challenge went unpunished. To rub salt into the wounds, Jordan Henderson's late goal was disallowed when Sadio Mane was deemed to be offside.
