Britney and Justin dated from 1999 to 2002, but their relationship first started blossoming behind the scenes of The Mickey Mouse Club. In an exclusive look at the book by PEOPLE ahead of its release on October 24, Britney talked about how she and Justin shared their first kiss while starring on the show. She wrote: “[Once] at a sleepover, we played Truth or Dare, and someone dared Justin to kiss me. A Janet Jackson song was playing in the background as he leaned in and kissed me.”

She struggled as her father "fat shamed" her

Britney explained how she was left feeling distraught when her father took control of her life and allegedly began critiquing her appearance. She wrote: “Feeling like you’re never good enough is a soul-crushing state of being for a child. He’d drummed that message into me as a girl, and even after I’d accomplished so much, he was continuing to do that to me.

“If I thought getting criticised about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father. He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it.” Britney also expressed her feelings that had she been allowed to live her way then her problems would have resolved themselves.

She continued: “If they’d let me live my life, I know I would’ve followed my heart and come out of this the right way and worked it out. Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick.”

Britney almost starred in The Notebook

Britney has expressed her relief that she wasn't picked when she auditioned for a part alongside former Mickey Mouse Club co-star Ryan Gosling in his iconic romantic movie The Notebook. She explained: "The Notebook casting came down to me and Rachel McAdams, and even though it would have been fun to reconnect with Ryan Gosling after our time on The Mickey Mouse Club, I'm glad I didn't do it. If I had, instead of working on my album In the Zone I'd have been acting like a 1940s heiress day and night."

Why she really shaved her head

Britney explained exactly what happened that prompted her to cut all her hair off. At the time in 2007 she was in the midst of getting a divorce from the father of her two sons Kevin Federline and was a constant topic of news and highly sought after subject for paparazzi photographers as she was billed as “erratic” and “mentally ill."

She said: “I’d been eyeballed so much growing up. I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body, since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back.”

Having an abortion

Britney claimed that her then-boyfriend "wasn't happy" when she told him she was pregnant. She claimed he said they weren't ready to be parents, which led to her ending the pregnancy.

Britney wrote: "But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young." Britney and Justin started dating when they were 17 and 18 back in 1999.

They remained a couple until 2002. Also in the book she penned: "I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby. I don’t know if that was the right decision. If it had been left up to me alone, I never would have done it. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father." She added: "To this day, it’s one of the most agonising things I have ever experienced in my life."

Britney recalled in her memoir how she and her mother, Lynne, 68, drank Daiquiri's together from when she was in the eighth grade. She shared: “For fun, starting when I was in eighth grade, my mom and I would make the two-hour drive from Kentwood to Biloxi, Mississippi, and while we were there, we would drink daiquiris. We called our cocktails ‘toddies.’”

She also shared how drinking with her mum was a very different experience to seeing her father Jamie's personality change when he drank. She said: “I loved that I was able to drink with my mom every now and then,” she wrote. “The way we drank was nothing like how my father did it. When he drank, he grew more depressed and shut down. We became happier, more alive and adventurous.”
