'I'm American and tried Wetherspoons for the first time - it's too cheap'

An American TikToker has shared her thoughts on Britain's favourite budget pub chain, declaring: "It was almost too cheap."

Wetherspoons, famous throughout the UK for its affordable food and drink, has become so much a part of British life that we take its quirks for granted. But for many foreign visitors the uninspiring decor and unconventional premises, do not meet their idea of a traditional English pub. You will find characters frequenting the bar of any Spoons but Americans hoping to meet a Hugh Grant stereotype will be disappointed.

One trans-Atlantic visitor, Kristen, has posted a review of a recent visit on the video-sharing app. Her caption reads: ‘overhyped’ The video starts in hopeful fashion: “Hey y’all, so ever since I’ve been to the UK, everyone’s told me to try Wetherspoons, and I finally did." But her dreams are dashed. "Honestly… not a fan”.

She adds: “There’s this huge hype around it and I expected it to be really good, but it just wasn’t there for me. She leave the most brutal put down for last: “Like, yes it’s cheap and cheerful, yes we love that… but it was almost too cheap.” The Tiktoker highlights the layout of the pubs, adding: “Don’t get me started on the stairs… I literally had to walk a mountain of stairs to get to the bathroom, and when you’re drunk, you don’t really want to go up and down a bunch of stairs”, reports the Express.

Kristen capped off her list of issues by concluding that “it just didn’t live up to the hype”. She did precede the statement by saying “no hate to the other Spoons…”JD Wetherspoon is the creation of Tim Martin who made his fortune building up the nationwide chain from humble beginnings. It is famous for converting unusual premises like old theatres and banks into pubs.

A traditional breakfast tends to be less than a fiver, while you can sometimes get a pint for as little as 99p - depending on where you are in the country. Britain's favourite chain has more than 1,000 pubs around the country. You can even find them in airports before you jet off on holiday. They may all look the same but Wetherspoons pub boasts a unique carpet, each inspired by the pub's name, location and building.
