This Morning viewers were left reaching for the remote after being told of the signs that they could have bed bugs.

Alice Beer was called in to try and "calm people down" but ended up making things worse for some after detailing the key things to look out for - and explaining the steps to take if you spot some inside your home. Many couldn't watch as photos of the creatures flashed up on screen.

The pests are on the rise in the UK, with data released by Rentokil last month finding there had been a 65% increase in infestations from 2022 to 2023. They are believed to have spread from Paris, which has seen plagues of the insects being reported in schools, hospitals and cinemas.

Brits are now on the lookout for the bugs following outbreaks after dozens of reports leaving people disturbed. "I don't think we should be panicking or having mass hysteria," she told Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond. "It's a really nasty thing if you get an infestation.

"They might be on our tube - we had them pre-Covid and now they're coming back as we're travelling again. We're nice transporters." Bed bug are "bound to bite you" Alice said but they are often attracted to certain people and not others. She went on: "We don't need to strip off as we enter the house - that's over-kill. But if you have been on a trip and you come back itching, yes - take things off at the door."

But Alice then warned: "Once you notice you've got them, you've got to get on top of things fast as boy, they like to spread. You're going to notice you have got them if you've got bites or if you've got blood on your mattress. It's disgusting, but it's what happens. If you noticed one or two, vacuum them up - but then deal with the vacuum. You can also steam or freeze them."

Viewers didn't like it one bit. One said: "I suppose you could burn your house down to get rid of bed bugs - and get a payout from the insurance company! #ThisMorning" while another put: "Wish I didn't watch #ThisMorning!" A third simply wrote: "Cannot watch sorry #ThisMorning".

After a skin-crawling video of a suspected bed bug crawling up the trouser leg of somebody sitting on the London Underground has been viewed almost two million times on Tik Tok, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan vowed to tackle the problem and said TFL disinfected seats every day.

He said: “We are speaking to our friends in Paris to see if there are any lessons to be learned but for a variety of reasons we don’t think those issues will arise in London; but there is no complacency from TfL." Bedbugs are small, brown insects that are close in size to apple seeds.
