Jeremy Renner has been the victim of a horrific accident while out clearing snow - and remains in a "critical but stable condition".

The Hawkeye actor was airlifted to hospital following a 'weather related accident while ploughing snow' outside his ranch home in the Sierra Nevada mountains on the border between California and Nevada.

A spokesperson for the actor said he was with his family and "receiving excellent care", while a major accident investigation team is probing the incident.

Around five feet of snow fellow overnight between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in the region - with dozens of people killed across the US amid heavy wind and snow.

Just weeks ago, Renner had posted a video of the snowy conditions outside his home near Lake Tahoe on his Instagram page.

Describing the ranch as his "happy place", Renner tweeted in December: "Lake Tahoe snowfall is no joke."

He stayed on the massive estate during the Covid pandemic and built a recording studio as a lockdown DIY project.

The Avengers star is a big lover of heavy machinery and frequently posts snaps and videos with his vehicles in the snow.

Last December, Renner was seen with a smile on his face as he drove his industrial-sized snow thrower around.

"I have so much respect for Mother Earth, and Mother Nature … I expect to lose the fight but I'll always give it my best shot," he wrote while trying to clear the snow.

The actor owns a number of snow ploughs that can move through the adverse weather conditions on big caterpillar tracks.

Posting a snap of snow covered tress and ground, he wrote: "How would you feel if your driveway looked like this?? I’m so happy Mother Nature dictates my day !!"

He also has winter weather buggies to give a more high-octane experience with his friends and family.

The 51-year-old has also spoken about spending time working with local fire departments to help their teams - and has even bought a spare fire engine.

Renner, who got an Oscar nomination for his role in The Hurt Locker, uploaded a video of him walking through the snow near his home in December 2020.

"A beautiful morning walk, it doesn't get any better than this," he says while twisting round the camera to show off the view.

And in December 2019 he could be seen driving a snow plough through the forest and waving out the window.

The actor wrote in the caption: "Holiday preparations for friends and family. What are your plans ??"

While clearing snow is a regular problem, the conditions are far worse this year due to the storms rolling across California.

More than 17,500 homes in this region are without power after a massive New Year's Eve storm blew through - with flooding and rock slides closing portions of roads.

Dozens of drivers had to be rescued on New year's Eve near Lake Tahoe, according to the California Department of Transport, as they spun out during the blizzard.

In the high Sierra Nevada, where Renner's home is located, about 2ft of snow fell into New Year's Day but as much as 5ft was predicted.

The actor remains in hospital - and his fans have been sending messages of support while he recovers.

While EastEnders actor Dany Hatchard tweeted: "Thoughts with Jeremy Renner and his family. Wishing him a full and speedy recovery"
