England star Joe Marler has fired back at criticism from Andy Goode in the best possible way following Sunday's thrilling World Cup quarter-final victory over Fiji.

Steve Borthwick's side dug in to pull off a hard-fought 30-24 win which sets up a mouth-watering semi-final clash with South Africa at the Stade de France on Saturday. Harlequins star Marler came on as a second-half replacement and although the 33-year-old prop helped see out the victory, he received criticism from ex-England fly-half Goode in a dig at his larger-than-life personality.

The former Leicester Tigers star tweeted during the latter stages in Marseille: "Marler asleep in defence probably thinking about trying to be unfunny..."

After full-time, Marler responded by firstly saying: "Appreciate the feedback mate," alongside a kissing emoji. The 87-capped international then added: "And give me a shout if you need a ticket for next week mate - my shout."

Goode responded to Marler's initial reply by saying: "You're welcome son! Head on now for the semi!" The player-turned-pundit also wrote back after the England prop's offer of a ticket: "Nah mate hosting a gig in London but thanks for the kind offer."

Marler classily replied: "Shame - thought you might have a gig out here. Catch up soon pal, love your work," to which Goode said: "London Town next Saturday night mate, no doing or saying anything silly this week now Joe head down and train hard."

Marler had a slightly more serious message while reacting to the win with ITV, also using the opportunity to test out his French skills. "We go again, we go again," he vowed.

"This is amazing (pointing to the jubilant crowd), we love you, thank you. Stick with us, we go again. Salut! Bye? See you, guys, thanks again."

Head coach Borthwick was proud as punch following the last-eight triumph, leaving England as the only team in the competition yet to lose a game, but as underdogs against defending champions South Africa. "Let's not forget this team was written off, and we will be written off again going to Paris," the 44-year-old, appointed less than 12 months ago to replace the sacked Eddie Jones, affirmed.

"Many people wrote that we wouldn't get out of the group. Maybe some of them are here tonight. The team performed well to top the group and performed well to find a way to win tonight. I don't really care what other people think of us. I care about the development of the team."
