Coronation Street has been hit with a number of complaints over violent scenes that aired last week on the ITV soap.

Over 50 viewers hit out at the dark episode, that saw one character stabbed and almost killed as part of a racism storyline.

The show's ongoing extremism plot reached a terrifying conclusion, as an attempt was made to murder Maria Connor.

Furious viewers took to Ofcom to complain about the violence in the episode that aired pre-watershed last Wednesday evening - with there being 72 in total.

According to the communications regulator, scenes of racial violence were the reason for the complaints, as the episode saw Alya Nazir stabbed and almost killed.

The attack took place at an event organised to highlight the Weatherfield refugee drop in centre.

Maria had just made a speech welcoming the refugees and offering them support – while recently groomed teen Max Turner was on his phone, listening to a character named Blake making a racist speech pledging to put an end to the refugee centre by whatever means necessary.

Max had been manipulated by a far-right group, with racist Griff isolating him from his loved ones and encouraging him to help spread his racist agenda.

Fellow teen Blake had also been manipulated it seems, and soon he decided to act out and he tried to murder councillor Maria.

Moments later, he was seen filtering through the crowds in the restaurant, after revealing he had a knife in his pocket.

Alya saw him trying to harm Maria and stepped in front of her, leading to a struggle which resulted in Alya being stabbed and seriously injured.

Gary Windass tackled Blake to the ground, but it was too late, with Alya crouched over and clutching her chest at the bleeding wound.

Blake was taken away by the police, but not before blaming Max as his inspiration behind the attack.

At the time, viewers took to Twitter to slam the "bloody violence" with many not keen on the dark scenes.

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
