Two men charged with the murder of footballer Cody Fisher on Boxing Day have been remanded in custody after their first court appearance.

Kami Carpenter, 21, and Remy Gordon, 22, are charged with killing the 23-year-old at the Crane nightclub in Birmingham.

The pair were not asked to enter a plea for the murder charge but both pleaded not guilty to a linked charge of affray.

After a brief appearance at Birmingham Crown Court as the nearby magistrates court was closed, they were ordered to reappear before a judge on Wednesday.

Police said Mr Fisher, who played for non-league side Stratford Town, was stabbed on the dancefloor of the Digbeth nightclub, which has since had its licence suspended.

In the wake of the tragedy, Cody’s club said it was to set up a fund in his honour to help young adults get into football coaching.

Chairman Jed McCrory said: “Stratford Town is overwhelmed with the support from all the non-league clubs which have contacted the club and I would like to thank the whole football fraternity for showing what football is about, up and down the country.

“We applaud them and thank them for their support in such a tragic time for everyone.”

A match between Stratford Town and Bromsgrove Sporting was postponed as a mark of respect for Cody’s family and friends.

Over the weekend Birmingham City held a minute’s silence ahead of their match with Hull City.

Mr McCrory, was tearful as he previously told Sky News: "The players are heartbroken. He was so close. And we're a family club.

"They all know each other. It's going to be a hard one to take for everybody. Everyone at this club. He was so well-liked.

"I'm just speechless. Anything we can do to help we will do. I'm just so sorry for [his family]."
