Scotland manager Steve Clarke has confirmed Andy Robertson won't play against France on Tuesday due to his shoulder injury.

Robertson hobbled out of Scotland's 2-0 defeat in Seville on Thursday after being clattered by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon. The Liverpool defender was clutching his right arm and is a major doubt for next Saturday's Merseyside derby against Everton at Anfield.

Clarke is hopeful Roberson, who is Scotland's captain, will be fit for November's Euro 2024 qualifiers against Georgia and Norway. Yet the left-back has returned to Liverpool for treatment and it's unclear exactly how many games he'll miss for club and country.

Scotland are already without one left-back, with Real Sociedad's Kieran Tierney nursing a hamstring injury. "We'll have a look and he (Robertson) will go back to his club now," Clarke told reporters. "It always seems to happen when you lose one player in a position.

"We lose Kieran then Andy picks up a shoulder injury. We'll see how it is and how it settles down. Hopefully he's good for his club as soon as possible and ready to help us in November."

Clarke won't miss Robertson too much in Scotland's game against France at Lille's Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Tuesday, as that is just a friendly. Liverpool fans were immediately worried about their first-choice left-back after Simon made contact with him.

"If the goalkeeper gets the ball, he can take everything else with him and Unai Simon has done just that," said former Scotland winger Pat Nevin, while working as a commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live. "Andy Robertson took a big, big hit there."

Steven Thompson, another former Scotland international, added: "We've got two superstar left-backs, now both of them are injured. (Nathan) Patterson and (Aaron) Hickey are great replacements, but they don't have the same big-game experience."

Scotland would've qualified for Euro 2024 if they avoided defat to Spain on Thursday. Scott McTominay thought he'd opened the scoring in Seville with a superb free-kick, but the goal was controversially disallowed for the softest of fouls on Simon.

Spain took advantage of that decision by scoring two late goals through Alvaro Morata and Oihan Sancet. Scotland still have two more chances to secure automatic qualification for the tournament in Germany when they take on Norway and Georgia.

A point against Norway at Hampden Park will be enough for Scotland, as will a victory against Georgia in Tbilisi. Clarke's side will also reach Euro 2024 if Norway fail to beat Spain in Oslo on Sunday. Erling Haaland is fit for that crucial qualifier.
