Gemma Atkinson left heartbroken after the loss of beloved family member

Fans and loved ones rallied around Gemma Atkinson after she revealed her beloved Auntie Sheila has died.

The mourning actress says the 93-year-old was the “matriarch of her family" after saying goodbye at her funeral service. She thanked her relative for teaching her to "stay positive" and says she is now at peace with her uncle.

In an emotional Instagram post the Strictly Come Dancing star, 38, who gave birth to her son Thiago back in July, spoke about her loss but said she lived a happy and long life as her followers and friends rushed to send Gemma their condolences.

Captioning the post and telling the world the cute thing she will miss most, the former Hollyoaks star wrote: “Today we said goodbye to Auntie Shelia. The kindest most caring lady and eldest relative we have. The matriarch of our family. After almost 93 years her body became tired.

“Now at peace and reunited with Uncle Peter and many more relatives, I’m sure they’ll be having a celebration together just as we did today at her send off.” Gemma paid tribute to her doting auntie and thanked her for teaching her to remain “positive”, before explaining that she thought that was the secret to living a happy and long life.

“As sad as funerals are, it’s always lovely having the family together having a good laugh and a good buffet!,” she continued. Thanks for teaching our family to always stay positive. I’m convinced that’s why you lived so happy for so long.

"Because regardless of the situation you always looked on the bright side. Sleep well…I’ll miss your pound coins sellotaped in my Birthday card this year, but I know you’ll check in on everyone now & again.”

In response to the devastating news, Gemma’s followers and friends were quick to show their support with the likes of her partner Gorka Marquez, Karen Hauer and Fleur East sending their good wishes. “So sorry to hear of your loss. She looks and sounds amazing! Sending love,” wrote one follower, while another added: “Sorry for your loss Gemma, thoughts with you and your family at this sad time."

Gemma also took to her Instagram Story where she shared more personal news. Posting a video of her step-dad ringing a bell at the hospital, she wrote: "Funny how the universe works. Auntie Shelia's funeral was today, so was my step-dad's last round of treatment."
