The BBC has canned Project Icon after just eight months and one series leaving music fans disappointed.

The reality TV show was bursting with big name-judges but there are "no immediate plans" to do any more, bosses have decided. The music talent competition was launched in March with ten unsigned UK artists competed for a big opportunity.

Hosted by Jordan North, multi-platinum selling artist Jason Derulo and his long-time business partner and music mogul Frank Harris joined double Brit Award winner Becky Hill as judges. But it wasn't the hit many at the corporation had hoped for.

Artist Dylan made history as the first transgender winner of a singing competition in the UK and he secured a record deal, a collaboration with Jason himself and got to perform at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. But it seems the singer could be the show's only champion ever.

A BBC spokesperson told TV Zone: "Project Icon is a bold, contemporary music show that unearthed some brilliant new talent including winner Dylan who has gone all the way from performing in local pubs in Cornwall to recording with Jason Derulo and Frank Harris’ music label in LA and performing at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend.

"We are delighted to have played a part in Dylan’s music journey and wish him the very best of luck in all his future endeavours. Whilst there are currently no immediate plans for an additional series of Project Icon, we’d like to extend our thanks to the entire team at MultiStory Media and ITV America, including Jason and Frank, Becky Hill and presenter Jordan North for bringing the series to screen and unearthing some top tier talent."

The launch earlier this year provoked much excitement as viewers were told exactly what the stars were looking for with the hunt for new talent on. Hopefuls had weeks turn turn heads in the industry as they understood demanding music challenges.

"This talent show leaves the shiny floor studios behind and instead throws the artists into the real world of today’s music industry," the BBC said before the launch last Spring. "Designed to find out who’s got what it takes to make it in the fiercely-competitive world of music, the unsigned artists will compete against each other in a series of industry-inspired challenges. Everything from creating viral social media videos, to tricky press interviews and of course the ability to perform on some of the UK’s most iconic stages.

"Across the series the judges will share their unique insights into how the music industry really works. At the end of each episode they will deliberate and choose the artists who are at risk of being dropped from the competition, with those at risk going head-to-head and performing a song of their choice. After this the judges will decide who has sung their final track and who will continue on their journey to becoming an icon."
