Chris Basham has undergone a second operation following his gruesome ankle dislocation while playing for Sheffield United.

The Blades captain went heavily over on his left ankle during an honest tussle with Fulham skipper Tim Ream in the first half of their Premier League clash on Saturday. Basham 35, went under the knife for the first time on Sunday and a follow-up operation was always planned, with the Bramall Lane legend now beginning his recovery.

The former Bolton and Blackpool centre-back posted via Instagram on Thursday morning: "Had my two surgeries done now and I can't thank the surgeons enough for the fast response to me, the first surgery was for cleaning up the wound I suffered and dislocation, the second surgery was to repair the ligaments and to fit a plate on my bone where the fracture was.

"I'm in a cast now and it feel a lot more comfortable. Will be in London still for another few days but then be going home to recover in the right way. Trying to stay positive everyday with great family and friends around me. Still overwhelmed by the support I have received. Thank you, Bash."

Manchester United defender and England international Harry Maguire, who came through the ranks at Bramall Lane, was among those to wish Basham well in the comments section, replying to his post with two celebratory emojis and a red heart. Team-mates past and present did the same, with Sheffield United's official Instagram account saying: "All with you Bash."

After the loss at Fulham which leaves United rock bottom of the Premier League with just one point to their name, manager P aul Heckingbottom said of the injury: "It's terrible, it's horrific.

"We've lost a good player, had to made changes we didn't want to change. We can't blame that. It's going to affect us and it's going to affect us for the season. I don't know what the next step will be, but he's where he needs to be and that's the most important thing. Everyone could see he needs to be in hospital."
