BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent gives co-star a warning as she cuts off live report

BBC Breakfast’s Sally Nugent had to cut off a live interview so a reporter could get to safety.

The presenter was hosting the morning show alongside co-star Jon Kay when they reported on the conflict in Israel and Gaza. On Wednesday morning, Sally and Jon spoke to the BBC's Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet who was reporting live from Ashkelon, just three miles away from Gaza. She gave an update on what had been happening in the last few hours.

However, Lyse soon heard a male voice from the side of the camera. She told viewers: "Sorry, I think we're being told....I'm going to keep recording. I think once we can get the camera off here perhaps we can keep reporting, we're going to move a little bit safe away." Viewers watched as the team moved away from where they had been stood and tried to steady the camera.

Lyse gave viewers an explanation as she pointed to the horizon. She said: "We can see the black smoke rising there and we've been told there could be some mortars landing in this area so as a precaution so we're just going to move a little bit away so we're in a safer area. But I think we're still safe to keep broadcasting." Lyse was able to carry on her report as she explained: "This is what it's like, it's a very, very unpredictable situation."

The reporter continued to talk on camera for another minute as Sally said: "Lyse, thank you so much for that but we're going to let you and the crew get to safety as quickly as possible. Thank you very much," before Lyse's video link was cut.

Last week Sally had to step in during another live report to distract viewers. Journalist Peter Ruddick was doing a live report from Manchester Piccadilly station when a passer-by noticed the cameras and started yelling his opinion on TV licence fees in to the camera – which completely disrupted the live report.

Peter was left flustered as he tried to continue with his segment but it soon became noticeable that this was a pointless task. The reporter was in the middle of talking about the loss of the Northern leg of HS2 to Manchester. Yet as the man contunued to shout "slash the licence fee," the report was cut short. Sally then took over from the studio and she said soon after: "Peter having a bit of unwanted attention there so let's move on shall we for a moment."

Viewers were quick to point out the blunder as they took to Twitter to voice their opinion. One person wrote: "Most sensible thing said in TV this morning 'scrap the tv licence fee." Another penned: "Scrap the tv licence fee was what the guy was saying #BBCBreakfast." Feeling sorry for the TV news programme, another person commented: "Oh dear #BBCBreakfast."
