Mrs Brown's Boys New Year's special had people switching off moments in as they said the BBC special 'ruined' 2023.

The latest offering from Brendan O'Carroll was shown on New Year's Day following Happy Valley, which returned to screens for a new series after a long break. However, some viewers were less than impressed to see the comedy show on this evening and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, insisting they wanted to "switch off" moments in.

The show followed Agnes as she waited for the valuation of an antique vase which has been in the family for years, whilst Buster and Dermot were convinced that Cathy's boyfriend Boris was a vampire.

Giving their verdict on the TV special, one viewer wrote: " #mrsbrownsboys about time it was cancelled," whilst another person tuning into the BBC New Year's special added: " #mrsbrownsboys No more please ,I used to absolutely love it but it's lost its way."

"A five year old could write a better script than this. How is this being recommissioned year after year?? #MrsBrownsBoys," a third shared, with a fourth adding: "Just how many times is BBC going to keep flogging this dead donkey? #MrsBrownsBoys."

A fifth penned: "To go from #HappyValley to the appallingly awful #MrsBrownsBoys is like going from eating caviar to shovelling s**t in your mouth," as a sixth wrote: "The absolutely brilliant #HappyValley followed by the dreadful #MrsBrownsBoys."

However, some viewers seemed to love the show and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

"Brilliant enjoyed that one tonight, definitely better than boxing days #mrsbrownsboys," one person shared online, as another added in a post on social media: "Much better than the Christmas Day episode #mrsbrownsboys."

A third wrote: "This episode is already better than the Christmas Day episode #mrsbrownsboys."

It comes after creator Brendan O’Carroll admitted he still struggles to accept that for many across the UK and Ireland, Mrs Brown’s Boys is a huge part of their Christmas and New Year schedule.

"I absolutely love it – I get goosebumps that Mrs Brown has become part of Christmas," he said, "That’s what people who come to the show say – ‘Ah, it wouldn’t be Christmas without Mrs Brown’. You’re kinda going ‘Oh my God, we established that’.

"Because in my day that was Morecambe and Wise. It wasn’t Christmas without Morecambe and Wise. So it’s a buzz."

Several of his children and grandchildren also appear in the show – so a family Christmas is a Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas. It forms a part of their festive family plans as they all sit down to watch it together.

"And then Christmas night, we have a pyjama party. So everybody comes, the cast, some of the crew. Everybody comes to our house in their pyjamas. And we have a few drinks and we all watch the Christmas episode (of Mrs Brown’s Boys) together – we all watch it for the first time, we haven’t seen it before," he said.

"It’s a buzz. It’s great. We look at each other and we go ‘No, you were great!’ ‘No, no, you were great!'"
