Emmerdale star shares fallout to 'dark' return twist as hostage identity exposed

Emmerdale star Danny Miller has revealed what's ahead for troubled Aaron Dingle after his huge return to the ITV soap in a major twist.

Aaron was revealed to be back in the village as he was exposed as the hostage being kept in the barn by Cain Dingle and Caleb Miligan. Cain and Caleb's mystery road trip was finally explained, as Cain's wife Moira Dingle stormed into the barn and found out what they were up to.

Locked up and tied up in a room was Cain's nephew Aaron, who left the village a year ago following the death of his sister Liv Flaherty. It was revealed Aaron has got himself into big trouble during his time in Italy, as he struggled with his grief and becoming estranged with his mother Chas Dingle, over her affair with Al Chapman last year.

Speaking to The Mirror and other press, actor Danny has now revealed the "dark" scenes ahead for the character as we learn more about what has gone on over the past 12 months. Aaron was at risk of being killed it seems, with another past character, Adam Barton, reaching out to Cain to save him.

Danny spilled that his character was "completely different" to the version that fans know and love, as he's spiralled. Aaron will remain in self-destruct mode for a while, with Danny promising "interesting" scenes ahead as he lashes out at those in the village following his permanent return to the soap.

He said of Aaron's state of mind: "He didn't want to come back, I think he was on a self-destructive path. He was more than happy to either kill or be killed over there in Italy. Adam makes the call to tell Cain that Aaron is going to be killed because he's just off the rails.

"He has lost the plot entirely. He's very selfish, angry, maybe slightly depressed in a way I guess from everything that's happened. And he's not dealt with the grief very well. So the state of mind is that he's just angry at everybody, and just constantly wanting a fight."

Danny confessed his worry that the audience will hate Aaron and what he's become, but he hopes the "interesting" character change will be understood given what has happened. He said: "Hopefully the audience, as amazing as they've always been with with Aaron, will see the self-destruct and self loathing part of it as opposed to him just doing it for no reason. He is very, very nasty to a lot of characters and says stuff that looks almost like he's thought about it.

"There's no remorse which kind of adds to that sort of darker side to him. He's got so much hatred for so many people. He didn't have that chance to grieve with everybody, he was almost hauled off by Chas and told to go in the nicest way possible so that she could keep her secret."

On what's ahead, Danny told us: "There's the reveal to the audience and to Chas, Cain and Caleb where he's adamant that he's been set up, he is adamant he's not taken this money. Obviously, he's lying, which kind of really sets the tone for the character which is completely changed.

"It makes a really interesting sort of story but eventually it's going to sort of come out why he's done it, and that money will be put to good use at some point. Whether that's through Aaron or not is a different story. The money that he says is his will be put into good use somehow, which will play out that week.

"It's a case of eventually getting him back in the village and well, if he gets out and if he gets back into the village he will have a lot of repairing to do with various characters which should be interesting. It stays on that arc and I know the producers were keen to have that kind of character who is looking for a fight and winding people up... then eventually, hopefully, he will return to the person he used to be."

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.* Follow Mirror Celebs and TV on , , , , and .
