Flower beds full of dandelions? Paths sprouting nettles? There are all manner of weeds lurking in our gardens and encroaching on our prized plants. But how to stop them coming back once and for all?

It seems that there is one household product that could help us get rid of those unsightly invaders. And you are almost certain to already have it in your cleaning cupboard.

When one woman asked for some advice on how to "kill weeds off" for good on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, she was inundated with the same suggestion.

"Tried everything! Vinegar on its own, vinegar with salt and washing up liquid, salt on its own, weed killer, boiling water, the list goes on," someone wrote in response.

"All kept coming back within a week and spent all summer trying to keep them at bay. Bleach and water was the only thing that killed them and kept them at bay.

"Don't use around plants though. I was all for trying not to hurt insects but it was ridiculous how much time and money I spent and didn't last long enough. I just used it around my patio."

A second person commented: "My brother was a gardener and he swore by chlorine. Be careful though as it will kill anything in its path." And a third echoed: "I just use bleach, the cheap stuff, and it works so well."

More and more people are turning to household remedies to tackle weeds in the garden. One Facebook user previously shared their hack. "I've tried and tested this method. Use a gallon of , one cup of salt, and two tablespoons of washing-up liquid. Mix it together and put on the weeds with a watering can. Within two days the weeds will die and after a week sweep them up.

"I have tried this and it works so well. It's not harmful to pets because no chemicals, I have a cat. Nothing will clear weeds as new seeds are blown into cracks with wind but just repeat above. It's the best natural weed killer I've tried."

Gena Lorraine, a gardening expert from , has explained that the acetic acid content found in white vinegar is what makes it so effective at banishing weeds.

Gardeners are also urged to make sure they only apply it to weeds sprouting up on gravel or patios, as white vinegar could well kill your plants or lawn.
