Strictly Come Dancing fans spot 'Gorka curse' as he and Nikita are eliminated

Strictly Come Dancing stars Nikita Kanda and Gorka Marquez were eliminated on Sunday night but fans spotted something odd about the results.

The Spanish professional dancer was paired with BBC Asian Network radio star Nikita Kanda in this series, after reaching the final in 2022 with Helen Skelton. However, observant viewers have noticed a recurring pattern, dubbed the 'Gorka curse', which suggests that Gorka is often eliminated early if he has performed well in the previous year.

This time around, things haven't gone in Gorka's favour as Nikita Kanda has struggled, landing in the bottom two for the second week running. The pair performed a jive for movie week themed around Clueless, but their performance did not impress the judges, earning them just 21 out of a possible 40 points, including a low score of 4 from Craig Revel-Horwood.

Gorka's reaction to the score was notably sarcastic, as he loudly cheered "Hooray!" when Craig announced his and Nikita's score. On Sunday, Graziano Di Prima and Zara McDermott faced off against Nikita and Gorka, with Zara and Graziano being unanimously saved by the judges.

Nikita was visibly upset as she was sent home, stating "I don’t want to leave yet, I feel like I've let him down. I've had the best time and I love all my Strictly family, I'm going to miss you all. This has been a dream come true, I'm so grateful. I've got to say the biggest thank you to Gorka, he has been the biggest support and I've had the best time ever."

Gorka reassured his celebrity dance partner, saying: "I am beyond proud of her, for someone that doesn't have any dance experience or performance experience to come on this show and dance in front of millions of people – for three weeks, I think it's incredible. You should be very proud of yourself, you have never let me down and I am very proud of you. This show is going to teach you so many things about yourself that you can take with you and I have incredible memories. I've never laughed so much in three weeks than I did with you!"

Viewers expressed their disappointment for the pair and discussed the so-called 'Gorka curse' as they flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their thoughts. @victoriacolby_ stated: "If Nikita is eliminated tonight, the Gorka curse will be real again.
