Tiger Woods could make a surprise return to the golf course later this year after being forced to withdraw from the Masters at Augusta National in April with an injury.

The 47-year-old is currently nursing a plantar fasciitis in his foot, and injury that has plagued him after a career-threatening car crash in 2021 where it was reported that he sustained multiple leg injuries.

The 15-time major winner underwent a surgical procedure to treat his post-traumatic arthritis, but in a shock twist the golfer has since been spotted back on the fairway. And now fans have been given hope that he may compete before the end of the year with a view to add another title to his collection following an illustrious 27-year playing career.

According to Golf Channel and NBC reporter Todd Lewis, Woods could feature at the upcoming Hero World Challenge - a tournament that is part of the PGA Tour schedule - which the golf icon hosts.

It would come as no surprise to see the golfer attend the annual event which sees 20 top-ranked golfers take part at Albany, Bahamas from November 27 to December 3.

The event is organised as a benefit for Tiger Woods' TGR Foundation which works to create and support community-based programs for children in America. The event has become a spectacle in recent years with the likes of Viktor Hovland, Henrik Stenson, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler lifting the trophy.

The news of Woods' return comes after the three-time US Open winner was seen hosting the TGR Jr. Invitational this weekend at Pebble Beach Resorts. In a video posted on X, the golfer couldn't help but pick up his clubs and make a chipped shot towards the fairway.

Woods had also been spotted taking to the range at Liberty National in New Jersey back in early September. He was seen talking and giving out advice alongside fellow PGA Tour stars Will Zalatoris and Rickie Fowler.

Woods' potential return comes after a year where he has only featured twice, including his brief showing at the Masters. The 47-year-old took part in The Genesis Invitational at the Riviera Country Club in February where he ended the event tied in 45th.

Following his injury sports journalist Stephen A. Smith called on Woods to finally retire from golf while appearing on First Take. "I watched him limping on the course before he bowed out on Sunday, and I was thankful he bowed out," Smith said.

"I think it is time for him to call it quits. I know Phil Mickelson is aged 52, but the bottom line is Phil Mickelson's body hasn't been through what Tiger Woods' body has been through."
