Tributes have poured in for a man who is believed to have died in a "strange and rare" shark attack but many questions are still left unanswered.

Felix Louis N’Jai, 52, was surfing with two friends off Wildcat Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore, California, when he disappeared. The group had been celebrating a wedding the day before. Witnesses reported seeing a shark pull him underwater at around 10.30am on Sunday but no body has been found, something very rare in shark attacks.

The groom of the wedding saw the attack happen. ““A shark came up, grabbed Felix by the neck supposedly, brought them down and that was the last they saw. Two other guys rushed out of the water, turned around and they saw blood and some commotion in the water. But no Felix and that was it,” another friend Jim Kennan said.

Felix was a tech entrepreneur and elite kite surfer who hoped to represent Gambia in the Olympics. Longtime friend David Thawley told KTVU: “Felix was everything to every one of his friends. We felt like he was part of our family, and I know so many others felt this way too. He brought pure joy, love, and light everywhere he went. He radiated like the sun."

“The idea that there is no trace to be found of Felix is haunting,” he told the Chronicle, “It’s grotesque that something so improbable and so dark is what consumed somebody that was such a bright light.”

Speaking to the SF Chronicle, Chris Lowe, a professor and head of the shark lab at California State University Long Beach, explained that sharks normally abandon the attack when they realise its a human which is not their preferred prey. Because of this the body is almost always recovered.

“For me it has been surprising to hear that nothing has been recovered,” said Professor Lowe. “It’s very odd, especially being relatively close to shore. For a body to completely disappear is very strange and rare.”

Authorities have not confirmed that a shark attack actually occurred because it's "really hard" to declare it as such if there is no evidence. Although the official search for Felix has ended, he is still considered a missing person with the park service working with the coroner’s office to decide the next steps.

A surfer in South Carolina has spoken of the his face.

Mark Summerset, 38, was suddenly attacked in a rapid assault by a sea creature on September 12. To this day, Mark says he can still feel pain in his face where the beast sunk its teeth into his flesh. "I felt this pressure on my face," he told NBC News. "It felt like a bear trap. I think he just ripped down a little bit. But sharks have five rows of teeth, so he tore me up pretty bad, and he let go.”

Mark was surfing in the early morning the day the attack occurred and jumped off his board. He said he saw a sea creature under the waves that then bit his face, but he wasn't sure what it was at the time.
