Mum claims son, 5, is 'lucky to be alive' after vicious dog attack
A five-year-old boy is "lucky to be alive" after he was attacked by a dog while playing with a friend. Laura Piert said she "heard a scream" as her son Jaxon was bitten by the hound on September 21.
The little boy had been out playing at the back of a friend's house when he was attacked by a dog after it ran out of a garden on Hempstead Close, St Helens, Merseyside at around 7.50pm. Jaxon was rushed to hospital after suffering bites to his arm and just below his ribs.
Another boy Jaxon was playing out with was also attacked by the dog. Jaxon is now "petrified of other dogs", according to his mum, and has been struggling to sleep and does not want to play out, Liverpool Echo reports.
"Doctors said it was lucky [the bite] missed his lung and organs. They said his bite was a level five, level six is death. He's lucky to be alive," Laura said. She added: "He will have bad scars and still has stitches. I'd rather of it have been me."
Jaxon still has stitches more than two weeks after the attack. It has been claimed the dog who attacked Jaxon has previously bitten children before. Laura said: "The police were not doing their job. It's not the first time, why was it allowed on the estate?" She added: "It could have been preventable. What would have happened if they both died?"
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge himTom Colborn claims his son Kayden, also five years old, was attacked by a dog, reportedly the same dog involved in the September incidents. Kayden was admitted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in May for around four days and had to have an operation on his arm following the attack.
"It had ripped all the tissue out of his arm," Tom said. "I was working on the private ambulances at the time and had seen dead bodies, I was used to it, but when saw Kayden's arm I went white, I think because it was my own son."
Tom added: "In the night he comes in to get in the bed with us [...] and when a dog is barking now he is always clinging on to me. My mum has a dog and he would not go into my mum's for two months."
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said they investigated the dog attacks in May and September. In a statement the force said: "We can confirm that officers investigated a dog attack that took place on Friday, May 19 on Hempstead Close in St Helens. At around 5.30pm it was reported that a dog attacked a 5-year-old boy at a property on Hempstead Close.
"The boy suffered a significant injury to his arm and was taken to hospital. The owner of the dog was issued with a community resolution order which included keeping her dog on a muzzle when out in public.
"A report of another attack involving the same dog was reported to police however there was no evidence or information that the incident took place. The owner of the dog was voluntarily interviewed by officers on Wednesday, September 27 following a report of another dog attack on Thursday, September 21 involving two five-year-old boys on Hempstead Close."
