Sheffield United defender Chris Basham had to be taken off after suffering a horrendous injury against Fulham.

Basham went down mid-way through the first half with an injury to his left leg, prompting a long delay at Craven Cottage. The medics were quickly onto the scene and the 35-year-old was eventually stretchered off after receiving treatment, which included oxygen.

He gave a thumbs up to the supporters, who applauded him off the pitch. An ambulance was ready to whisk him off to hospital, allowing the game to continue after a 14-minute delay.

Sheffield United wrote on Twitter: "Jack Robinson replaces Chris Basham who leaves Craven Cottage on a stretcher following a lengthy stoppage in play. We send our best wishes to Bash, and will communicate updates as and when we have them."

Fulham added: "We've had a lengthy stoppage following a really nasty injury for Chris Basham, who will be stretchered off the pitch. We're all sending you our best wishes, Chris." The score remained at 0-0 at the half-time break, which came after 16 minutes of added time.

“He’s down with a very, very bad injury and best wishes to Chris Basham. We’ve got a stoppage in play, paramedics are on…get well soon Chris.”

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said on BBC's Final Score: "Basham went to cross the ball and it looked like his foot got caught in the turf.

"Best part of 10 minutes now that the medical team have been on the pitch, looks like he will be stretchered off.

"We're not medical experts, but that does look like a very serious injury. We're all just thinking about Chris Basham right now."

Basham is a club legend at Sheffield United, where he has played since joining from Blackpool in 2014. He has made 393 appearances for the club, scoring 15 goals in all competitions.

And his absence capped off another sobering day for the Blades. who fell to their seventh league defeat in eight Premier League outings. Goals from Bobby Decordova-Reid, Willian and a Wes Foderingham own goal was enough for Fulham as Paul Heckingbottom's side remained rooted to the bottom of the table.

Speaking after the game, Heckingbottom offered an update on Basham, telling reporters: "He's where he needs to be, in hospital with the doctors and the medical team.

"No-one wants to see that, ever, and when you're involved in it and it's one of your players it's far far worse. I've been on a pitch with a teammate and involved when it's someone else but when it's one of your players its tough and you can see that with the players.

"No [diagnosis] but you guys have seen the pictures, it's terrible, it's horrific. We've lost a good player, had to made changes we didn't want to change.

"We can't blame that. It's going to affect us and it's going to affect us for the season. I don't know what the next step will be, but he's where he needs to be and that's the most important thing. Everyone could see he needs to be in hospital.
