A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a woman was allegedly sexually assaulted inside a tent in the early hours of Friday morning.

West Yorkshire Police received reports a woman had been the victim of a "serious sexual assault" that had occurred inside a tent in St Peter’s Square, Leeds city centre. It's said the alleged attack happened a stone's throw away from Leeds Bus Station at around 12:24am on Friday morning.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of rape and is being questioned by detectives. The man remains in custody while police investigate the alleged attack, Leeds Live reports.

On Friday morning, West Yorkshire Police put up a cordon around a blue tent in Leeds city centre. At least one police car and one police officer were spotted at the cordon on Friday morning, although the cordon has since been taken down.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 12.24am today, police received a report of a serious sexual assault on a woman that had occurred in a tent in St Peter’s Square in Leeds city centre. A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape in connection with the incident and remains in custody.

"A scene was put in place in St Peter’s Square to undergo forensic examination but has now been removed. Officers from Leeds District Safeguarding Unit are continuing enquiries."
